Who is TapWater?
TapWater is an American jam rock experience out of San Diego that blends rock, funk, Latin, jazz, bluegrass, country, blues, and pop into down-home jambalaya. While their influences range from Pink Floyd and Willie Nelson to Tito Puente and Stevie Wonder, TapWaterâs sound captures the smooth sophistication of Steely Dan, the vibrant color of the Grateful Dead, and the feelgood flavor of the Doobie Brothers.
âMusically we are curious,â acknowledges Steve Moore, who sings lead vocals and plays guitar and banjo. âWe shape each genre into a song, then add two tablespoons of rock to it -- just enough to sweeten the sound for most everyone to enjoy.â
TapWater relies on smart songwriting and polished musicianship rather than name-brand flash to excite their crowd. The bandâs homegrown humor and down-to-earth style complement the sound seamlessly, and create a live show that is particularly appealing to people who have tired of mainstream pop.
âTapWater is just plain fun,â remarks Tim Jones, who plays keys and accordion. âEveryone attending our show is instant family. Whether you come to party all night in the club or bring your kids to see us at the festival, the whole point is that you put your worries down for a while and celebrate whatâs good in life.â
The band is optimistic about their career. With an energetic electric show and a cozy acoustic set that features upright bass and banjo, TapWater has a limitless versatility that pleases people of all ages and backgrounds.
âTapWater is going to be a household name,â laughs Ravi Laird, the bandâs lead guitarist. âOur music connects to that lighthearted spirit we all share. When I look out into the crowd, I see every kind of face smiling back at me.â
TapWater has been together since 2003 and they have had their share of challenges. In spite of personnel changes, day jobs, family obligations, and the daily demands of running a business, the band has pushed forward, determined to make a living at their craft. In Spring 2006, the members wrote a business plan, secured funding, recorded a new album, and bought an RV -- and come July 1 they are quitting their day jobs to tour 10 states in 5 months.
âThis is our best shot,â says bass player Wes Elliott. âI have always known that we can be successful. We wasted too much time waiting for an industry person to help us. Finally, the hammer fell on our heads â we are not Cinderella. If we want to get anywhere, we have to do it ourselves.â
TapWaterâs transition to tour has been met with a range of responses from friends, colleagues, and family. Some are thrilled to see the band embrace the adventure while others are bewildered at how these 30-something guys can trade steady paychecks and health insurance for peanut butter and jelly and an RV.
âThere was no choice really,â responds drummer Marc Tropeano. âWeek after week I sat in an office 12 hours a day wrestling with numbers. I made good money and I loved my colleagues but I always knew that office work didnât have an important purpose for me. Some say weâre crazy but I know there just has to be more to life out there.â
