FOLK: Modern Folk, ROCK: Roots Rock
Details:
The Rye are a five-piece based in Galway, Ireland, playing savage driven ceol. Their music is a lively fusion with Irish roots, including elements of Irish traditional, country, reggae, folk, rock, blues and soul. Comments from the audience remark on the energy, the soulfulness, the rapport, the intensity of their performance and on the mad mix of musical styles all of which result in that indescribable authentic RYE sound. The members of The Rye are vocalist and acoustic guitarist Kevin Melly, Anna Faulkner on fiddle and backing vocals, Alan Walsh on banjo, electric guitar and backing vocals, Ciaran Kelly on drums and harmonica and Barry Wallace on the bass. Although the five individuals have their distinct musical backgrounds spanning a wide variety of styles, they are fortunate to have between them an uncanny sense of the musical quality they are striving for. Since their first gig on the 1 January 2006 in the Roisín Dubh in Galway The Rye has been playing steadily all across Ireland, in venues as diverse as small country pubs, nightclubs, and on festival stages. As a result, the creative input, musicality and originality of the five individuals has been distilled into an exciting and refreshing live show! The Rye is fiercely proud of the fact that their music appeals to vastly different crowds of all ages. âCome rain, hail or snow The Rye will put on a great performance, and it was obvious to see that they enjoyed playing as much as their audience loved listening and dancing to itâ writes Breifne OâRourke of the Cruinniú na mBád Festival in Kinvara. Galway Bay FM has described The Rye as âthe liveliest band to come out of the West of Ireland since the Saw Doctors.â Neil Fatae of the Cambridge and Beyond ezine reviews their CD such: âNot to be confused with the English folk band of the same name in the 90s, The Rye are a new band from Ireland that are looking to make an impression on the world. The self-titled cut is recorded live, a bit rough and ready around the edges and an absolute joy for anybody that likes their folk music raucous and rocking. The sound is as raw as singer Kevin Melly's throat must be at the end of a gig. It's together they know what they are doing, but you're never quite sure where it's going next and you're not sure they do either, but it's great musicâ. The Rye are one of those bands that you canât help enjoying when you listen to them... they are class!ââ¦Band of the Week on SaturdaySessions.com .
