The riveting lyrics of 18-year old singer/songwriter, Caitlyn Smith, are truly an example of her heart poured into language. Since she could remember, she has been wrestling with words and melodies to try and express herself. At the age of 12 she was pounding out song after song on the piano and a year later picked up her father's guitar and adopted it as her own.
The young songwriter began performing in her church at the age of seven. Being brought up by a strong Christian family influenced her lyrics considerably. Caitlyn writes about her faith and of her life experiences, and her songwriting reveals a depth of insight as well as a mature artistry in crafting lyrics and melodies.
In 2001 she began recording her debut album, learning to be, joining with some of the best musicians that Minnesota has to offer. This album is a collection of thoughts and emotions from a 15-year old girl delicately put together forming a fantastic Indie pop album. Her first two singles "I Found You" and "Carries Me Away" were added to the play lists on local Christian radio stations around the Midwest.
After receiving great response from fans, she went into the studio again and recorded her second album in 2003. The second album really displays Caitlyn's maturity as an artist and is flavored with a plethora of musical sounds. It contains some powerful pop tunes that have already been deemed as hits. The deeper songs on the record are a wonderful showcase of Caitlyn's very original sound. This is Caitlyn's attempt to grab a national audience and to jump-start her career in music. The second album was released in the Spring of 2004.
Something magical happens when she grabs a guitar and steps up to the microphone. Coffee shops become silenced; loud, band-loving teens turn quiet; adults turn an ear to the obvious gift and embrace all that this artist has to give. It may be her confidence, or the heartfelt expression of her music. Possibly it's the huge voice that comes out of such a small girl or maybe it's the rare combination of all these gifts that makes people stop and listen and say, "You're going far."
