âCharming and bewildered ⦠sepia-toned music that evokes 1930s blues and jazz and goes all over the musical mapâ¦â (The Villager)
19 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Americana, FOLK: Folk Blues
Details:
After great success in New Yorkâs downtown club scene and two well-received live albums, Ethan Lipton has taken his Orchestra into the studio to record MR. SOFTY, a groovy and ticklish collection that invites the listener to open a bottle of Rioja and bask in the confounding joy of Liptonâs mixed-message sincerity. Finally, classic Lipton songs like the delightfully epic âGirl From the Renaissance Faire,â the touching âFlora and the Fauna,â and the all-too-relatable âPlace to Goâ are presented with the intimate clarity they deserve. And new favorites like the samba-tinged âBossy Man,â the haunting âIn My Car Againâ and the disturbingly catchy âHit Itâ make ear-candy out of Liptonâs unique blend of candor and irony.
Liptonâs previous CDs, on indie label Home Office Records, have earned him a loyal following and high praise from hip kids (Fluxblog, Hit Refresh, The Deli) and grownups alike (NPRâs Weekend Edition called him twisted, dark, sophisticated, schleppy and sad all at onceâ).
MR. SOFTY comes courtesy of Liptonâs own Muckraker Records and spotlights the eclectic talents of his âOrchestraâ: Eben Levy on guitar (Chucklehead), Ian M. Riggs on bass (One Ring Zero, Howard Fishman) and sax man Vito Dieterle (Joel Forrester).
Produced by Huck Bennert, with arrangements by Levy, Riggs, Dieterle and Lipton, MR. SOFTY lives where jazz, blues, country, rock and folk intersect and bears the imprint of the songwriterâs inimitable influences, from John Prine to Donna Summer, from Leonard Cohen to Ben Webster, from Tom Waits to George and Ira Gershwin to The Ramones.
Ethan Lipton & his Orchestra have played all over New York (Joeâs Pub, Tonic, Rockwood, Barbes, Southpaw, The Living Room), Los Angeles, (Tangier, Silverlake Lounge, The Derby) and the Northeast (MassMoCA, AS220, Pop!tech). The band recently contributed a song to the SANDINISTA PROJECT, a Clash tribute album now out on 00:02:59 Records. For more information, visit: www.ethanlipton.com and www.myspace.com/ethanlipton
