Details:
After working as screenwriter and TV writer, Mark Nutter has returned to his first love: songwriting. "(Mark Nutter's) Songs are so off the wall, they're on the floor." The Scotsman
He grew up in a motel near Joliet, Illinois -- hard to get more sophisticated than that. He studied acting at Loyola University in Chicago; Mark performed at the Goodman Theater, the Organic Theater, the St. Nicholas Theater, and The Second City. In 1981 he co-founded the critically-acclaimed comedy ensemble Friends of the Zoo.
Mark wrote the music and lyrics and co-wrote the book for the musical "Wild Men," featuring George Wendt, which enjoyed successful runs in Chicago and Off-Broadway in New York. His television writing credits include Saturday Night Live, Woops!, Nurses, and Third Rock from the Sun.
He co-wrote the feature film "Almost Heroes," featuring Chris Farley; he also worked on the scripts for "Black Sheep," "Dead Man on Campus," "I'll Be Home For Christmas," and "Muppets In Space."
Mark currently performs with the four-man comedy ensemble The Bicycle Men, and he wrote all the songs. The Bicycle Men attracted rave reviews and sold-out crowds in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and Edinburgh. In 1984 the show was named "Outstanding Overall Production" at the New York International Fringe Festival.
"Songwriter Mark Nutter's hip humor and mastery of musical genres established him as one of Off-Loop theater's top talents, a comic tunesmith in the tradition of Tom Lehrer and Abe Burrows. In the late 80's and early 90's his deft melodies and daffy lyrics distinguished the hit musical Wild Men!, a popular spoof of the men's movement, as well as string of brilliant revues from the sketch-comedy troupe Friends of the Zoo."
Albert Williams, Chicago Reader
"It's (The Bicycle Men) all held together by songs - but what songs. Composer Mark Nutter has a genius for pastiche, offering comic takes on Gilbert and Sullivan, French film music and languid Brazilian tunes with badly translated lyrics." David Gritten, The London Daily Telegraph
"(The Bicycle Men is) Absolutely not to be missed...delicious...intensely funny."
Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune
