Ultraset is the latest incarnation of a band actually conceived in 1995, in Madison, Wisconsin. Bassist Derrick McBride, after working with several successful bands, wrote and arranged the music for a new project- The Woolgathering. Feeling the need for change during the late 90s they headed west, landing in the Bay Area in 1997. The newly named Sweetheart enjoyed some success in the San Francisco area, playing at most of the popular venues and consistently drawing crowds. The poppy and melodic sound earned them an EP release and a performance at North By Northwest in 2000.

But marriages, babies, and drummers would eventually take their toll on Sweetheart, ending this run, albeit prematurely. Like a bolt from the blue, McBride's childhood friend and guitar gunslinger Jeff Hall moved to town at just the right time. With their former guitar player now strapping up a baby stroller instead of a guitar, Hall wasted no time reconnecting with McBride to continue what theyd started growing up in Chicago- making music. Still, the honey-sweet sound of the band would continue to shift. Jill Jodar had become the permanent keyboardist, but vocalists and drummers seemed to change as often as broken guitar strings.

The band found themselves essentially members of a new family- but managed to retain some of the melodic signature of Sweetheart. Hall and Jodar found an ear-pleasing chemistry together, often playing off of each other, and contributing to a larger part of the creative process. Jodar, a classically trained pianist, was developing a style as a song writer. Hall too, was evolving as a song writer and becoming a guitarist with more flexibility. Still, the current lineup would prove to be a relentless challenge for Hall, Jodar, and McBride. Unable to get the level of commitment necessary to follow the path forged by Sweetheart, the three minstrels eventually found themselves with no one else in the room to look at except each other. Hall and McBride made the executive decision that Jodar would sing. While initially reluctant, Jodar seemed to have a twinkle in her eye at the thought of finally being able to do it right. Jodar formally trained and developed the trio's ideas into the signature voice of what is now Ultraset. Meanwhile, Jodar and McBride made a similar decree, that Hall would program Brad (the drum machine) and save them all more heartache in the drum department. Ultraset is now complete, with McBride's experience, Jodar's evolution, and Hall's gun slinging ready to be heard from a sound system near you.
