Details:
Let Beth Decide started in June 2006 when Shannon "Davie" King from Australia came to visit Hawaii. He met Rob Badger while stumbling into a recording studio that had been rented by Rob. The multi talented duo jammed for 30 minutes and decided that they were musical soul mates and that they had better get to Rob's home studio to lay these jams down before they forgot them. The musical magic started there. In February 2007 Shannon flew back out to Hawaii to live with Rob for the entire month in which the rarely left the confines of the music studio. When the two emerged, 7 songs had been completed and 47 bottles of Lindeman's Cab/Merlot had mysteriously disappeared. The end result is the Let Beth Decide "30 Seconds" demo/EP.
Lyrics:
1. Dirge
I die tomorrow, forget the past
No damn sorrow, lay me to rest
Forget tomorrow, Iâll do it best
Iâm lying there, I canât guess that Iâm holding it back
I think Iâm dead, forget the rest
I think Iâm dead, cold concrete breast
And when I cross, gold covered and all
I think Iâm dead, I think Iâm dead, I think Iâm dead
I think for coffins, my favorite wood
And thanks to often, didnât ever even know if I could
Afford it truly, upholstery in mine,
I love red velvet, your heart beats inside
I think Iâm dead, forget the rest
Cold concrete love, call it a breast
I think Iâve got the crosses I bare
I think Iâm dead, I think Iâm dead, I think Iâm dead
My life went briefly, now lay inside
The dirt fell sweetly; I go with good byeâs
Red light in my eyesâ¦..
I think Iâm dead, forget the rest
Cold concrete hands, laid me to rest
I know I got the crosses I bear
I think Iâm dead, I think Iâm dead, I think Iâm dead
Explanation:
My brother is a mortician and of course you would think âwow what a morbid job, dealing with death all the timeâ. Well, that is how our culture looks a death. Some cultures such as tribal societies and Buddhist communities look at death like a natural progression in lifeâ¦.wellâ¦.it is. So we decided to write about our own funerals to trivialize the thought of dying. A little creepy maybe, but it was a nice tune anyway.
2. Plastic people
Oh no!!
Walk around smile and stare
Not at the ground but standing
Over there with a sound
I stop and smile so happy now
Iâm a plastic person and I know that you want to be
Youâre a plastic person but you look like a part of me
Youâre a plastic person but I know that you want to be
Iâm a plastic person just like you
4,000 people canât be wrong
Oh no!!
Talk to my son I say to him
Daddy loves you but I got to go
Put a blindfold on me and Iâll leave today
But daddyâs not coming home anyway
Iâm a plastic person and I know that you want to be
Youâre a plastic person but you look like a part of me
Youâre a plastic person but I know that you want to be
Iâm a plastic person just like you
I live in a perfect house
I live on a perfect street
My car is perfect too
I look perfect and plastic just like you
I look perfect and plastic just like you
Explanation:
I live on a US Marine Corp base and everything about the base just looks so contrived. I mean in reality it is like itâs own self-serving city. Everything you need is there on the base. People manicure their lawns and drive luxury cars or big trucks. The families all buy their kids really nice toys and everyone has this uniformly smiling face. The streets all look the same with government housing and cars. But behind all this is the constant reminder of death and the job of a Marine, which is of course to go to your death in the war. All these kids grow up without a dad for months at a time. The wives are left to raise a family on their own while the fathers are called away to fight a war they may or may not believe in.
3. Fire
It takes another part of me
It burns so bright I cannot see
I shield my face and then I find
The heat escapes into my mind
My head it cools, a fire burns (a fire burns)
It takes my soul and then in turns (a fire burns)
My head it cools, a fire burns (a fire burns)
My head when doused in flames I learn (a fire burns)
I stare to dance, my sight it thrills
Enter my mind the fire fills
So stare, so to see
Silence, it burns to be
Take more, a part of me
Explanation:
You ever watched fire? Itâs entrancing. You can lose yourself in it. It symbolizes the technological difference that separates us from animals. We were able to harness fire for cooking, later we employed it as a weapon. Ultimately it will destroy us all. It also symbolizes consuming passion for whatever you are doing. Like playing music for example. If you get too passionate about it, you lose sight of everything else around you.
4. You choose
You choose to wait, you left today
You choose to be, the man I want to see
We face out to be, to be far
Can I see him, and it seems to be
You choose to be a part of me
I face it I choose, complacent I choose, I choose to be
A better part of me, a better part of me, a better part of me
And drink too much, I get another crutch
Dig your claws in, commit another sin
Smoke too much, grab some girls I clutch
Grabs another part of me, another part of me, another part
You choose to be, a better part of me
It grabs a better part of me
Another star I canât see, itâs gone
A part of hell
A part of heaven
A part of god
A part I want
When I saw
Another time
When I walk
When I call
I choose to be, a better me, a better me
Thanks cards and walks, a picture frame that calls
Another photograph in historyâs page
That I want a wish and stage
And you afford a cast that calls
And you donât call
I choose to be, feelings wrestle with me
I choose to be, demons wrestle with me
I canât be a better man
I choose to be a better me
Some excuse
Demons I canât save, I call it again
Stand best friends
And when you canât be a better me
Explanation:
We all have faults, we all have demons that we struggle with. Sometimes they consume you, sometimes they make you do things you wouldnât normally do. The reality is that, at the end of the day YOU are the one who decides where your life is going. Everyone can claim to have an excuse for why their situation is the way it is, but reallyâ¦..who can you blame? No one. We all have to make that choice to be a better human being.
5. Whole
Fill sand pots of me
Build a castle I canât see
And it fills a void in me
And it fills a void in me
Empty glass I love the sun
Iâm standing here in front
I want a whole to bury me
I want a whole inside I see
Donât hold me back
Stands a silence in me
For a question I can be
You question everything about me
You question everything
I think I can be
I donât mind at all
I canât find a whole
I canât find a whole
Deep enough to save
Another part of me
I want a whole to bury me
I want a whole inside I see
Donât hold me back
I look through a glass
A window of pain
And life seems to hold
Iâm losing the gain
I can think I fold
Hold out again
And when my whole
My whole in a friend
I donât mind at all
I canât find a whole
I canât find a whole
Deep enough to save
Another part of me
I want a whole to bury me
I want a whole inside I see
Donât hold me back
Explanation:
This is about finding your soul mate. It doesnât necessarily mean your lover, but like for Davie and I, we are musical soul brothers. We are both integral to each otherâs spiritual and musical development.
6. Nice song
I see a way before you call
Yesterday, just having fun
Before I go, I just be long
Itâs a nice, itâs a nice, itâs a nice song
Call away donât call at all
Cause today unjust you fall
Cry away donât cry at all
Itâs a nice, itâs a nice, itâs a nice song
Picture frame on a wall
Cleared glass forget it all
Memories all boxed and gone
Itâs a nice, itâs a nice, itâs a nice song
Quickly fade, we fell the fall
Consequence never entered thought
Before I go, foreplay walk
Itâs a nice, itâs a nice, itâs a nice song.
Talking cheap, roads with chalk
Happy ends discreet no talk
Footpaths good-by I walk
Itâs a nice, itâs a nice, itâs a nice song
Explanation:
This one is a little personal. Someone really close to me came out to Hawaii to visit and to get married while they were here. They have been together for 2 years and they still argue about silly things. Both of them are head strong and they still got married. After the honeymoon, they were talking about getting the marriage annulled. So Davie wrote these words about that. There was a nice little wedding, a nice little vacation but they just werenât ready for all of that. They gave up and all they have left is the pictures and memories that they shared while they were here. So the story made for a âNice Songââ¦so that is what we named it.
7. Egan
I want, I want, I want, I want
I hand you an opportunity
To build something besides a city
Or help somebody else
But you help somebody else to
Build it bigger to the sky
Doesnât matter who can die
I take what I want I crush a tree
I take another part of your humanity
What I want, what I want is
What I get, all I want
I take more, I take it all
I take more and more and more and more
I take it all you give
Take a part of me
You can take all of humanity
Build it bigger she said to me
Crush everything in front I see
Had an opportunity
To build something inside of me
So proud it seems to me
Take away all Iâll be
Today so proud donât care
I donât care, I donât care
Take all the small things from the small people
And when I walk away they talk my way
All the little people look like ants just to be on
The biggest hill
Iâm a locust on the world
How can you watch still?
Explanation:
Look at all of this globalization. Economic imperialism is destroying indigenous cultures and things are missing from our history books because we as a human race have wiped entire civilizations off the face of the planet. Same with the old growth forests in Tasmania, or the extinct animals on the National Geographic channels. Take you pick, they are all gone, FOREVER. Global warming is causing polar bears to drown because they have no more ice to live on. We as people just kind of turn a blind eye to it, until its too late.
