"Friends in Recovery
with music that touches the soul"
"As one person I cannot change the world but... If I can change the world of one person then my job is done".
Tony Marossie grew up in Pasadena, California. By the age of 13 through his own bad decisions, he became a âWard of the Courtâ. His new home was a place called Eastlake Juvenile Hall in East Los Angeles. This was only the beginning for Tony. Drugs and Alcohol consumed his every thought and by the age of 16 he was drinking and using drugs on a daily basis. Dropping out of school only made things worse for Tony. He was ordered by the court to join the Military the day he turned 17 or spend time in prison. Heâd spend the next 25 years in and out of Treatment Centers, Jails and Institutions chasing something that was right in front of him the whole timeâ¦it was his music.
Through the help of a 12 step program Tony cleaned up his act and picked up his guitar and started writing music about his life experiences. He started to seek out other Recovering Musicians and put together a six piece band called âSelfish Steamâ. In May of 2002 Selfish Steam received a Prism Commendation Award and a Prism Certificate of Merit (sponsored by the Entertainment Industries Council and the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation) for their "Outstanding contribution accurately depicting Drug and Alcohol Addiction in a Music/Music Video Recording. (www.prismawards.com)
Sobriety and persistence has taken these guys on an amazing journey with no end in site. Sharing the stage with Eddie Money, John Sebastion, Aztec Two-Step, Johnny Winter, Ivan Neville, Rick Derringer and many more is a direct result of "Getting Sober" and doing the next right thing.
The ingredients of Selfish Steam are - Tony Marossie (guitar/vocals), Nate Russell (Bass), Phil Worrell (guitar/vocals), Peter Manning (guitar, synth and vocals), Brian Grismala (percussion) and Perry Rego (drums).
Selfish Steam has been Dubbed by the media as "Friends in Recovery with Music that Touches the Soul". Their all original music is written from their own life experiences. Their music has its own style. Their originality and the fun they have together is truly magic.
Selfish Steam is so much more than just a band. It is truly a band of brothers, helping each other in their daily journey through life. To be able to touch people with our music and see the response in their eyes is the greatest gift we could ask for. When ever we play we say if we reach just one person then it was all worth it. The more people who can hear our music the more we can maybe help, even if it just makes them think. We claim no affiliation with any group or organization and do not represent anyone except ourselves.
For the last several years we have been working on a way to communicate with the younger generation about underage drinking and making the right decisions in life. Speaking from experience, we have made many wrong decisions in our lives which led to jails, institutions and near death.
Music is and always will be an effective universal communication tool. We have come up with a fun, effective and non-threatening way to reach the younger generation. Underage drinking is a reality and we donât expect to stop it but... we can make a difference. Through live music and straight talk we send a message to our audiences about our experience of alcohol and drug abuse and where it took us and what it took from us, sending a clear message to the kids. Selfish Steam is the real deal, been there done that and are standing on the other side. We are not anti-alcohol. We are advocates of doing something about it if it becomes a problem. We are not affiliated with any group or organization and do not represent anyone except ourselves. Our music was written from our life experiences and captures our audiences with heartfelt ballads and upbeat Rockin' tunes. Below are just a few comments from some of our younger audiences.

I really hope you guys continue being an idol for kids my age, along with adults who are/were in the same position you guys were in. Keep it up. :)

"We're no doctors, we have no college degrees, we're not therapists but, this we do have...
A past that we wouldn't wish on anybody, a present that is next to none...
And a future full of hopes and dreams". (Tony Marossie Co-founder of Selfish Steam)
