ROCK: Americana, FOLK: Folk Blues
Details:
"some guy named robb" sounds like an answer on "Who's On First?" That's what catches everyone's attention. When someone reads over the sign as to "who's playing live music tonight" they actually say the name out loud. Some scoff, some stay puzzled, most laugh, but more come to find out what it is. Whether they peek their head in the door or stay the whole night and take the CD's home with them, they find out who or what "some guy named robb" is.
Robb McCormick began the "some guy named robb" phenomenon almost seven years ago. A man who decided to quit the four jobs and bountiful income he was accustomed to and just do what he loved, writing and playing music.
Mind you, I said what he loved, not just playing music, but playing his own music on his own terms. And he has successfully been doing that ever since. In fact, Robb has managed to do what few bands or artists in the area (or the world) have been able to do, support himself with his art.
With a repertoire of over 350 original songs, fifteen years of professional music experience fronting a band, & thousands of his four original CD's sold coupled with thousands of gigs throughout the United States, this guy named Robb has done all right for himself.
By creating and maintaining his own independent record label, KRP Records, he has joined the independent music scene across the country as a contender, with a good product and a sound backing. By playing both high and low profile gigs he shows he has what it takes to back up the hype.
Robb's music differs in stylings pulled from Rock, Folk, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Spoken Word and Spiritual. Many of the people who have visited his website, www.someguynamedrobb.com, and left guestbook messages have simply called him "poet". While others rave about his many performances throughout the years and how his music has touched them. Whichever style of music you catch him on, it's what goes on between the songs that equally fascinate people. He breaks down the wall (he calls it the 'wall of pretense') between audience and performer. He talks to them like they're his best friend, Not as an act, but simply because he's being honest.
Nowadays you can find him all over the web, be it on his myspace account or at cdbaby.com, purevolume.com and itunes. But your best bet is to catch a live show. You just don't know what you're missing until you've seen about ten shows. Because, like a chameleon performer, he is different wherever he is. Rocking it out in the bars, Folkin' it up in the coffee houses, hammin' it up in the pubs, or quietly strumming along and whispering in the restaurants.
With seven years solo under his belt, he's earned his place of respect in this reviewer's eyes. Not many people have the courage to do what they want to do. And speaking from experience most tend to give up along the way, or take a different direction. It seems as though Robb was born to do this. And if he's not careful, he may just wake up and find himself famous one day.
