ROCK: Acoustic, FOLK: Angry
Details:
I write about everything, and anything that comes to mind. There is a purpose beyond personal expression with everything I write; everything that happens in life has something that can be learned from it, and I'm hoping that someone can gain something beneficial to them from my life story.
I love music in which the passion far exceeds the ability. If I make a mistake, itâs because in that moment my passion and my sincerity were too great for my skill. The lyrics mean the world to me and the fans Iâm truly interested in are the ones who read them. Much of my CD is recorded live because you canât capture true intensity in the studio. If I had to choose, I'd rather be creative than good.
The only reason I got into music was because I had something to say, and music seems to be the best avenue; people memorize lyrics that can be recalled with a single note of a song without even trying. I was in a Punk band (Strike) for 5 years, a Hardcore band (Victory Over Death) for 2 years, a Rock band (Sixgun) for a year, and another Hardcore band (Phinehas) which I am still in, now 5 years running. The acoustic route allows me to express more of my heart and passion to more people, and allows me to be more personal with the audience.
Itâs difficult for me to choose a genre; I feel a lot of different styles come out in my music that others may not hear. So in my opinion, my lyrics are a mixture of Folk story-telling and Punk hymns, my music is angry like Rock but sad like the Blues, my structure and phrasing is creative like Indy and Avant-Garde, and my performance has the energy and emotion of a Hardcore show. No one but me may think any of this has to do with my music, but since youâre asking me, this is what Iâm telling you. My main influences are The Suicide Machines, Rx Bandits, Cursive, and Falling Sickness. Some other influences are Nico, The Clash, Jewel, Howlin' Wolf, The Nerve Agents, skycamefalling, mewithoutyou, The Mercury Program, Otis Redding, Poison The Well, Operation Ivy, Elliot Smith, Billy Idol, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Dead Kennedys, X, Django Reinhardt, Every Time I Die, Further Seems Forever, Dashboard Confessional, Fugazi, Gorilla Biscuits, James Taylor, Joy Division, Kid Dynamite, the Kinks, Mason Jennings, Muddy Waters, Patti Smith, Rancid, the Rapture, the Ramones, Rocket From The Crypt, the Shins, the Specials, Taken, Teagan and Sara, the Velvet Underground, X-Ray Spex, Violent Femmes, Modest Mouse, Hopesfall, Minor Threat, 7 Seconds, 88 Fingers Louie, AFI, Against All Authority, Agent Orange, Agnostic Front, B.B. King, The B-52âs, Bane, cold war kids, The Cure, The Colour, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, The Faint, Funeral Oration, Hall & Oates, The Impossibles, Interpol, Jackie Wilson, Journey, Killing Theory, Michael Jackson, The Misfits, Miss Leota, Murs, Norma Jean, Slick Shoes, Smashing Pumpkins, Sublime, The Temptations, Tears for Fears, Underoath, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Walls of Jericho, and Zao.
