The Still Point Sound

The sounds come from Still Point, but the roots branch out to tap rock and country, pop and bluegrass, jazz and folk genres. Members of the band span a wide array of musical backgrounds. One holds a post graduate music degree, while another is self taught. One is a former rock musician, and another played in the military band during his service in the U.S. armed forces. This unlikely combination of musicians and singers stews and cooks until it spins out eclectic concoctions, with each song taking on a life of its own. The sounds range from a rocking, bluesy âLove We Needâ to the haunting âGloriaâ (both from the CD âWitnessesâ) to the bluegrass/gospel feel of âChurchâ (from the CD âPraise Himâ). The performances have a very real quality that reaches out to the listener.

The Still Point Story

The band came together as a group of volunteers to serve as the musical component in a weekly contemporary worship service. After compiling a repertoire of standard contemporary Christian music, they began to look for ways to stretch. They brought in relevant secular material, as well as unique arrangements of lesser known Christian and gospel pieces. In 2005, they began to introduce original songs in the services.

The congregation and the clergy were very supportive, and the connections between the band and this community of faith grew. The song âLet It Be Knownâ (from the CD âWitnessesâ) was composed for the baptism of a baby. That child was the first born to a couple who are vocalists in Still Point. The song was first performed at that baptismal service. It has since become a favorite of the congregation, and has been used as the baptismal response both in the contemporary and traditional services. The band has received requests ranging from a high school student wanting the sheet music for âMy Brotherâs Keeperâ (from the CD âPraise Himâ) for a talent show performance to a mother wanting âA Reply from Corinthâ (from the CD âPraise Himâ) to be played at her daughterâs wedding.

The next step came when the band took to the studio to record the collection of songs for the CD âPraise Himâ. This was followed by the production of the CD âWitnessesâ.
