Details:
Carolynn Black: n., NY orig. 1. laid-back, female singer-songwriter-blues mama, accused of encouraging happiness, dancing, and good vibes through music. Currently, she can be found lurking around the streets of Madison, WI searching for people in need of a Cheshire-cat smile of a song and hawking her new cd, livin' in a ball factory.

Carolynn Black was born in Mamaroneck, NY, a sleepy little seaside suburb of the big apple, and from the first day of music class she wanted to be a singer. Nothing could make her happier then, and with the exception of her fiancé, nothing could make her happier now. After college, grad school, and a brief stint as the lead singer of The Blueshounds in our nation's capital, she followed her dream back to NYC at the end of 1997.

Carolynn quickly formed her own band, Carolynn Black & The Blues, and hosted a weekly jam for two years at The Wreck Room, a cozy little haunt in the heart of Greenwich Village. In March 2001, she self-produced and released Let it go, an eclectic collection of rootsy blues, f.u.'s, and mostly true stories. The opening track, "Think of you" was played on the inaugural edition of Jonathan Clarke's weekly new music radio show "Out of the Box" (formerly called "Ground Zero") on NYC's Q104.3 in April 2001. Michael Allison from Music Dish wrote of Let it go:

"Carolynn Black & The Blues is a band that creates a bluesy folk rock style that bleeds with an intense energy and soulful aura. Carolynn's vocal style is sexy and sultry with a lot of passion and feeling. Just the way I like."

Playing in and around NYC for 5 years with The Blues, as well as singing lead vocals for The Healers, a kickin' r&b/soul/blues cover band, honed Ms. Black's performing and writing skills, ultimately leading to the release of her second album, livin' in a ball factory, at Bleecker Street's famed The Bitter End on December 4th, 2004. The title is an homage to the Spalding Factory she lived in with her aforementioned fiancé in Brooklyn, NY. Produced by Ms. Black and her bass player, Dean Zucchero, the album was recorded with members from The Blues, The Healers, a few special guests, and includes a couple of blues originals, a garage-rock-punk-dance around-your-apartment-love song, a swingy-waltzy ode to Amsterdam, some intimately personal pleas, and a four covers - in honor of some of her musical heroes. Accused of sounding like the freaky lesbo love-child of Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin, Carolynn describes herself as a blues-inspired-rootsy-funky-country singer. She is all those things, and then some.
