Details:
Cates Ave. is a N.C. State formed band who originally started as a standard jazz combo but quickly morphed into the progressive sound that we get today. We were formed under the premise of no stylistic or artistic limitations in the sounds that we create.

Featuring our stunning lyricist Liesl on three of our tracks (Blues It Again, By The End, and No Yet) we do our best to present an original and unique sound to the listener. The saxophone and guitar usually play leads and melodies with each other while alternating with the pianist. The roles can easily mix, such as in By the End; the bassist takes a solo throughout the whole song with the sax gives structure and rhythm to the song along with the solid backbeat of the piano.

The rhythm section of Cates Ave. is also very interesting to listen to as both the drummer and bassist shy away from play the same lines and riffs over again. Paco almost always modulates the sounds of the drums to change the feel of the piece (most people think that he shines best in Captain Culpepper) while Bassman is constantly working with the drummer to create the best pocket.

Our stylistic influences range from Led Zeppelin to Dave Brubeck and Tool to Charlie Parker. This album is laid back for the most part but has a couple of intense pieces and modulates through styles like one would expect a jazz band to play. Enjoy the music and be on the look out for Captain Culpepper Pt. II.
