Shrouded in treble cloth and bubblewrap, Jon Gake tells of his travels like a close friend who has just returned from a treacherous journey.
7 MP3 Songs
FOLK: Folk Pop, ROCK: Acoustic
Details:
"It's folk pop, I guess," says Jon, pointing at nothing. He's sitting in what appears to be a very uncomfortable, high-backed chair in the corner of his tiny apartment. "I haven't left this room for two hours," he grumbles, holding a putter. I can hardly keep his attention as he flips through the channels. A fat cat sleeps on top of his slippers. He's in his underwear. A rotten, long cigar sits in a hideous gold ashtray next to him, filling the room with a musty odor. I wonder how long it's been burning, or if he's even smoked it. I do my best to get under his skin but it's tight, locked up. His huge poster of Clint Eastwood covering the majority of the wall behind him gives me the creeps. I'm beginning to wonder why I came here to talk to him in the first place. He finally turns his head to me after a long silence, asking like a confused old man, "What can I do for you?" He's grinning, but I don't understand why. He starts to tell a joke but loses interest after a few sentences, reaching down to pet the cat. "I don't like cats," he says.
It goes on like this for several more minutes. He finally explains that he recorded these songs in a studio somewhere in Arizona "near a freeway" and that a girl named Amber Gore played cello on most of the songs. He says Amber likes horses. "Travelin' music," he jokes. I'm not even sure this is actually him. He hands me a CD and a filthy wad of paper as I'm leaving. I nearly throw it away when I get home, only to realize that it's an "information sheet" about the EP, which I will reproduce here:
"From the bottom of a midnight bunker deep in the center of the Earth it was fathomed by phantom as it dropped from the sky slowly by purple parachute. Many days passed above the ground, and many songs were crafted atop its gaunt stature. Soon an early eight were deemed most appropriate for the occasion, which was not the first but certainly the most flirtatious affair that Jon ever encountered. And in the end it was paid in full with a big black eye."
...I don't get it either.
