Jon Ward Bauman received the Bachelor of Music in composition degree from the University of Colorado where he studied with Cecil Effinger. The Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees were received from the University of Illinois where he studied composition with Robert Kelly and Salvatore Martirano. In 1965 Bauman was awarded a Fulbright Grant to study with Bernd-Alois Zimmermann in Cologne, Germany.
He taught general music in the Chicago Public School System and, from 1970 to 2003, was a member of the faculty at Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland. In addition to his duties in theory and composition, he directed the Jazz Ensemble. He founded the New Music Group and served as Chair of the department. He taught at the Conservatorio Statale di Musica, in Adria, Italy in the spring of 2002, 2004 and 2005.
Symphonies No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, âHorizonsâ, and âDivertimentoâ for string orchestra have been recorded by the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra. âAdagioâ for orchestra was recorded by the Slovak Radio Orchestra. âOverture to McNeillâs Rangersâ was recorded by the Potomac Highlands Symphony Orchestra. String Quartets No. 1, 2, 3, and 4 and âAndante Cantabileâ were recorded by the Moyzes String Quartet. Woodwind Chamber Music was recorded in Italy. âSonusâ for timpani and piano or chamber orchestra and the âDivertimentoâ are published. Five CDs are available.
Bauman was the co-founder and music coordinator of the summer concert series "Music At Penn Alps". He was Music Director and Conductor of the Penn Alps Chamber Orchestra, the Symphony Under the Stars Orchestra, the Western Maryland Symphony, and the Potomac Highlands Symphony Orchestra.

Recorded by outstanding Italian musicians, the compositions in the String Chamber Music, Vol. 1, include a duo, violin with piano, violoncello with piano, a piano trio, a piano quartet and a work for string quartet.
