about the artist:
First Laureate of the 1996 Esther Honens Calgary International Piano Competition and a Laureate of the 1998 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, Maxim Philippov is one of the outstanding pianists of his generation. He was the recipient of the Rachmaninov Prize at the 1993 Leeds International Pianoforte Competition, leading to a London recital of which The Times reported, âHe is clearly a pianist with much to say.â Philippovâs versatile repertory ranges from Bach to the contemporary.
Philippov has appeared in countries across Europe in recital, with chamber groups and with orchestras. In 1997 he was guest artist at Canada's Festival of the Sound, then went to Germany for a 10-city recital tour. In 1998 he performed concertos in Calgary, Windsor, Regina, Kamloops and Edmonton, and made his Toronto debut at the prestigious Women's Musical Club of Toronto. In 1999 Philippov again toured Germany and made his debut in New York with Schumann's Fantasie in C minor, Op. 17 and Rachmaninov's 13 Preludes, Op. 32. Harris Goldsmith in New York Concert Review wrote of his performance: âHe brought out much color and contrast, and, when appropriate, emphasized diamond-like brilliance in rapid passagework.â
âThis is a young pianist of considerable musical gifts and undeniable keyboard command,â reported Ronald Broun in The Washington Post of Philippovâs Kennedy Center recital debut last November. âPhilippovâs tone was meltingly simple and straightforwardâ¦. This was patrician playingâ¦.â
Born in Moscow, Maxim Philippov gave his first public performance at the age of eight. He was accepted at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow at the age of 14, where he received a masterâs degree. Vera Gornostaeva has been his chief musical instructor. When at home in Moscow he teaches at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory.
