City Folk is a folk-rock duo that hails from South-Western Ontario, Canada. They have a folk-rock influenced sound with compelling and curiously phrased lyrics and wholehearted harmonies over eager guitar. They recently wrapped-up production of their second album "Good times Gone" in a makeshift studio in Guelph, Ontario.

"Good times Gone" is City Folk's full-length follow up to their 2002 EP "Campfires and Skinny-dipping." The new release represents every colour in the spectrum between folk and rock. "Folk like Me" is nearly a traditional folk tune, painting a picture of a rambling folkie 'chasing the sunset to the horizon' with an openly roots guitar part accompanied by violin. On the other end of the spectrum is "Today" which presents the undeniably rock influenced vocals of Jay Davis, pushing City Folk very closely to pop-rock. The album has track after track of roots rock tunes reminiscing about better days. The title track "Good times Gone" with references to the drive-in, the Beatles and 'pals all gone and married' represents perfectly the back-checking feeling of the album.



"... the main theme I kept seeing was tunes about the good ole days and break-up songs. When I was young my parents had this album called 'music to park by' - you know? - make out songs. I just figured we could do the same 'music to yearn by' ..."

But don't fret - "Good times Gone" is not all depressing. Although the message may be sombre, the music is far from it. "Squeeze my Heart" is a funky upbeat tune with a catchy guitar part. "She's into me" is a surprise gem on the record. In this soulful duet Chad and Sandy Jandu of Sibling Rivalry sing about the exciting initial dating phase.

"Is it really?"

Chad Nuttall was raised on a diet of Rock from the 50s & 60s with a little bit of 70s. This love for the oldies is reflected in City Folk's willingness to play standards at backyard parties. The early 90s saw a change in taste and sound for Chad as he embraced artists like Nirvana, Barenaked Ladies and Green Day. In High School Chad was Co-President of his high school music department and performed in the choir, band, and was a co-founder of the schools percussion ensemble. Essentially he was the coolest geek at his high school. "The Chad" is currently in his 4th year of Geography at the University of Guelph. His tastes in music have morphed once again to include singer-songwriters such as Matt Nathanson and Jason Mraz that dominate the College charts, while still enjoying the ever-popular classics. Chad questions anything and everything, drinks coca-cola like a banshee and works in Residence.

"I don't think she's hot"

Jay Davis also had the oldies pushed on him by his parents while growing up. In the 80s he was rockin' with Guns and Roses and crooning with groups like the Nylons and Boys II Men. In high school he was literally involved with any group he could be - from starting up the percussion ensemble with Chad, playing drums in the school rock band, strumming in the guitar ensemble and everything in between. Jay Davis is one of those guys that can play anything - give him an instrument and he'll make a sweet sound. A trained drummer, Jay tries to be involved as much in music as he can and enjoys a wide variety of music from artists like Our Lady Peace, Tool, Eminem, to folk-rockers like John Mayer and Matt Nathanson. Jay is more commonly referred to by his friends as Jay Davis - he is working full time while he waits for his big break into the music business.
