Captain Coconut is steamy horn-driven funk that makes you want to move. They have a contagious, inviting, upbeat presence; they are what live music is supposed to be: a funky good time.
8 MP3 Songs
URBAN/R&B: Funk, JAZZ: Soul-Jazz
Details:
Captain Coconut's debut CD, entitled "Shoop!", features 8 original tracks, recorded, produced, mixed and edited entirely by the band.
It features: Dan Knobler (guitar), Matt Porter (keys), Zack Rosen (electric fretless bass), Greg Evans (drums), Matt Chiasson (tenor/alto/soprano sax), Jon Saraga (trumpet) and Danny Rivera (baritone sax)
----------------------------------------
Captain Coconut is funk music at its finest. They play it and they live it. The seven-piece band has absorbed all the old R&B and soul masters and gobbled up the classic jazz and funky soul-jazz records made decades before they were born, from Jimmy Smith to James Brown, from Coltrane to Maceo. In other words, they know their funk.
Hailing from New York City, Captain Coconut has played CBGB, the late Tribeca Rock Club, the Cutting Room, the cozy P&W's Sandwich Shop, and are regulars at the Knitting Factory. They opened for Eric Krasno and Adam Deitch on the Lower East Side at Scenic. On the first Saturday night of New Orleans JazzFest 2006 they opened for percussion master Bill Summers and his all-star band at the Blue Nile on Frenchman Street. This year, the full seven piece band flew down to New Orleans again to play a set at Rotolo's in the French Quarter during JazzFest '07.
These guys have the wisdom and experience that no other band their age can claim. Guitarist Dan Knobler and bassist Zack Rosen have won awards and scholarships from the Berklee College of Music while still in high school. Matt Chiasson (tenor sax) and Danny Rivera (baritone sax) were members of the prestigious High School Grammy Band in 2006 and 2005 respectively. Dan Knobler, Zack Rosen and Andrew Abramowitz received an honorable mention at the Berklee High School Jazz Festival for their playing with the Fielston School's Improv III band. To top it off, keyboardist Matt Porter is a seven time award winning film maker.
Their influences range from the classic records of the '60s and '70s to the fresh talent in today's scene, and include the city of New Orleans, Derek Trucks and his band, Lettuce, Soulive, the Allman Brothers, Miles Davis, Robert Walter and all his bands, John Scofield, Tower of Power, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Jimmy McGriff, Dr. John, Adam Deitch, Grant Green, George Benson, and other pioneers of jazz, funk and soul music. It doesn't stop there; Captain Coconut has written a load of their own classic tunes, forging the future of funk.
There is a natural chemistry between these guys, a shared love of music and a love of creating it. You can feel it at their highly charged live shows. Every time they play together good things happen.
The band is unsigned but very busy. Daniel and Zack are high school seniors; Matt is a freshman at NYU, Danny and Matt, attend the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and Drew is a sophmore in high school. The business of music hasn't hit them yet. Because they're so young, people show up at their gigs expecting a kids band and are blown away when they find themselves in the presence of a tight and tested funk dynamo. A Captain Coconut show is always a funky good time. You can see and hear the pure joy of good friends making great music each time Captain Coconut steps onstage.
