THE MOUNTAIN is Doug Faveroâs tribute to his hometown of Red Lodge, Montana. Red Lodge occupies a beautiful valley in Montanaâs Beartooth Mountain Range which was originally a hunting grounds for the Absaroka or Crow Indians. European immigrants, including the composerâs Scottish and Italian grandparents, settled there in the early twentieth century. Favero got to know the wilderness surrounding the town working as a trail hand with the U.S. Forest Service during the summers of his college years.
THE MOUNTAIN is solo piano music in contemporary classical mode. Its themes and rhythms are inspired by the folk tunes, church hymns, and western music which the composer heard and played in Red Lodge as a child.
