Jeffrey L. started playing the guitar at the age of twelve under the guidance of his grandfather Newman Williams (first cousin to Grover Washington Sr.) By the age of sixteen, he was teaching guitar at the Carozza music School in Yorktown Heights, New York, where he formed his first band âEclipseâ. After high school, Jeffrey L. attended Morgan State University where he played guitar and keyboards in various bands, most notably with Maysa Leak the lead vocalist for âIncognitoâ. Through the next few years, he worked with artists such as Lenny Williams, Gary âMud Boneâ Cooper of Parliament fame, Kut Klose, and Mike Marshall of Timex Social Club. Jeffrey Lâs next stint in the music business would be with none other than Frankie Beverly & Maze. He toured with Maze for seven years as Frankieâs guitar tech. This latest offering by Jeffrey L, âDaddys
Girlâ features the vocals of Shirley W. Smith, Jeffrey Lâs Mother. It is a piece whose inspiration was to honor the memory of his grandfather, and Shirleyâs Daddy, Newman Williams.

Shirley W. Smith, has been singing since her early days of elementary school talent shows. Her musical influences included gospel great Mahalia Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Sam Cook, and Otis Redding. But her greatest influence by far was from her dad, Newman Williams, an inspired blues guitarist and vocalist. Shirley began refining her vocal talents as a member of the female vocal group âThe Starlightâs,â achieving early success at New Yorkâs Apollo Theatre âAmateur Hourâ winning a recording contract.
Daddyâs Girl, was a spontaneous inspiration between Shirley and her son, Jeffrey L. to honor the memory of her Father and his Grandfather, Newman Williams.
