"Pilgrim Soul brings to mind the great barrier busting, genre-bending albums of the '60's and '70's. The first album by singer/songwriter Joe Ongie, Pilgrim Soul features Steve DiStanislao on drums, Curtis Herron on keyboards and accordion, and Todd Smith on bass. Laced with thoughtful lyrics and exotic musical flourishes, the songs are difficult to define, but easy to like. The album opener, "Heavenly" sets the tone: a finger cymbal chimes, an electric guitar cascades, and you're cast into a sea of strumming acoustic guitars and propulsive drums. Aggressive, yet melodic, the music belies the beautifully tragic imagery Ongie paints with his words ("...she hides the Star of David tatooed on her wrist"). The tune is simple, the subject matter is not. The rest of this fine album veers back and forth between rollicking rave-ups and atmospheric acid-soaked dreamscapes. Worth checking out."
