The second CD release by vanguard guitar ace and SF Bay Area mentor Lindsey Boullt is a tour de force collision course of hot chops, fusion, world and Arabic tinged rock. The disc is a high profile whoâs who with Jerry Goodman, Derek Sherinian, Stu Hamm and Peter Van Gelder in tow to exploit the six slingerâs encompassing mesh of assertive but compatible styles. âMoving Panvishnuâ and âAuroraâs Auraâ are obvious tributes to the glory days of early 70âs jazz-rock with Goodman stretching out across Boulltâs fluid but restrained playing reminiscent of Allan Holdsworthâs most engaging leads. Perhaps the most striking statement comes on âCall for Peaceâ with Sukhawat Ali Khan singing an emotive traditional lead vocal that recalls Jimmy Page and Robert Plantâs high profile endeavors. Sherinian is showcased prominently on the discâs closing piece, which twists the Indian rock experiment further with fiery outcomes. Bassist Stu Hamm shows why heâs the master of the session strut on the aptly titled âGroovin with Stuâ and lastly the composer ainât afraid to get heavy either as heard on âBravo Davo de la Torreâ. Fans of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai can walk up, shake hands and embrace enthusiasts of Shakti and Zakir Hussain with this interlocking and well crafted set of pieces due to hit the guitar playing world head on. And yes there will be many smiling survivors.
