The 12 songs in this collection raise questions about the kind of planet we're creating. They tell some dramatic stories about world events. One or two may make you laugh or cry. A melody might just creep up on you, after a couple of hearings, and linger in your head. I hope so. But above all, these songs want to make you stop and think more often about what we're doing.

The events of 9/11, supposedly, have "changed our lives forever." But how? One difference is an onslaught of slick, or downright gooey, ads and news spots--featuring "heroism" and "patriotism." If you believe them, then what we all have to do as a result of 9/11 boils down to "buy more, spy more, and fight more." Well, there's a place for that. But what if "buy more, spy more, and fight more" are also a real part of the problem? Will we ask about that?

Not so long ago, we understood that the purpose of better art was to illuminate and help solve our deeper human problems. It was called "legitimate" art. Nowadays, on the other hand, the great bulk of the most finely crafted art is commercial. It is focused on sales, not truth. Advancing the interests of narrowly-defined, but usually very wealthy corporations, it has little to do with the beliefs or best perceptions of any human artists. Okay, but how then do we address our real problems? This channel called "human art" is already overwhelmed.

Wake up! Look around! Is there a dragon on your doorstep? Is it friendly? Or threatening? THE QUESTIONS WE AGREE TO ASK ARE PERHAPS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE ANSWERS WE GET. There are many kinds of heroes. We need them all.
