Review: Jane Austen's gentle social satire and the timeless warmth and vividness of her characters have made her classic stories beloved worldwide.
Austen was born in England in 1775. Destined to become one of the world's most famous authors, at the age of twelve she decided to devote all her spare time to writing. Although Austen's gentle social satire was evident in her first writings, she struggled for years to become published. In 1897 she submitted her novel, First Impressions, and was firmly rejected. (This book was later published as Pride and Prejudice, and has become a world classic.)
In 1802, Jane accepted Harris Bigg-Wither's proposal of marriage - only to change her mind the next morning. The resulting scandal forced Jane and her sister Cassandra had to flee to Bath until society's shock blew over.
Finally, in 1810, Sense and Sensibility was accepted for publication on a commission (subsidy) basis, with Jane herself paying the printing costs. The book sold well, however, and was quickly followed by Sense and Sensibility and Mansfield Park. By the time Jane wrote Emma her books were so popular that the Prince Regent pressured her to dedicate her next book to him.
Jane died of Addison's Disease in July of 1917. Her final two novels - Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published after her death. Many of Jane's friends believed that of all Jane's characters, Persuasion's heroine Anne Elliott was most like Jane herself.
