Description:
Persuasion tells the story of 27 year old Anne Elliot, who was persuaded to break off her engagement to a poor but handsome naval captain eight years ago. In this haunting and beloved Jane Austen classic, Anne meets her beloved once again. Austen's gentle social satire and the timeless warmth and vividness of her characters have made her novels beloved worldwide.

Review: Jane Austen clearly had fun writing Northanger Abbey. Even though the novel presents several quite serious themes, there are many comic elements, and the whole seems to have been written tongue-in-cheek, with a wry smile on the author's face. It is a good-natured Horatian satire in many places, gently making fun of the foibles of both youth and age, in an effort to laugh us out of our folly. ...Robert Harris, Virtualsalt.com
Austen pokes fun at her peers in this story, in which her heroine, Catherine Morland, is hopelessly addicted to macabre romance novels that wreak havoc on her imagination. ...Amazon.com
This is a fun novel to read, and one really gets the impression that Austen had a lot of fun writing it. As with all of Austen's novels, this is part love story and part a tale of coming of age. Ripe with comedy, this book takes a light-hearted look at what it was like to 'husband' hunt in a day and age when wealth, and genteel manners, dictated who you could and could not marry. The writing is lively and expressive, and it is, I think, the most lighthearted of all of Austen's novels. largeprintreviews.com

Although Austen's gentle social satire was evident in her first writings, she struggled for years to become published. In 1897 she submitted her novel, First Impressions, and was firmly rejected. (This book was later published as Pride and Prejudice, and has become a world classic.)
In 1802, Jane accepted Harris Bigg-Wither's proposal of marriage - only to change her mind the next morning. The resulting scandal forced Jane and her sister Cassandra had to flee to Bath until society's shock blew over.
Finally, in 1810, Sense and Sensibility was accepted for publication on a commission (subsidy) basis, wit
