Description:
THE HEART HEARS A SMALL MESSAGE an excerpt from that novella Then he stopped and stood in the shadows for a long time, maybe twenty minutes.  Darla watched with her glasses as our suspect watched a house from the shadows, then he moved, like a cat, silently and swiftly, without a sound. He was gone, with out a trace, into the darkness of the street and houses.  He had moved on to his prey and was now attempting his attack.  We ran down to where we had last seen him, I looked at Darla.             I dont know Albert, he vanished, there one minute then gone the next.             We began to move around the cluster of buildings, cautiously moving from shadow to shadow, we stood in silence, hoping to hear a sound, which might give us a clue to where Simmons might have gone. In the slight chilly breeze, I saw a window open, the curtain had pulled itself out of the house, and we went and stood under the window.  We stood for a few minutes, it was quiet, the breeze was the only sound, which was perceivable. We began to move when we heard a loud thud, barely audible, through the open window, then a muffled cry. Darla gave me a boost and I went up and through the open window. I left Darla behind, I was all alone in the dark house, the window led into the kitchen, and I hurried through the house and followed the sounds, which I could now hear clearly. This was all a long shot, but my gut told me I was on the right track. As I climbed the stairs, I could hear someone struggling.  I had my pistol out and the safety off, I moved into the room where the sounds where coming from, on the floor where two people wrestling and rolling back and fourth, a life and death struggle ensued. I felt some one behind me and I turned to see I was startled by Darla who was about to turn on the lights.             The lights went on, the person who was dressed all in black, was startled and immediately got to his feet and fled past us, Darla spun on the balls of her feet and fired at the fleeing person who was wearing a black ski mask. The shot went into the molding
