Description: At the end of World War II, an American task force investigates a Nazi project to reanimate the dead and summon strange monsters from other dimensions. Deranged by their own studies, the Nazi scientists have been difficult to find, much less talk to. Only the linguist Susan Gilbert has had any luck getting their cooperation. When it turns out that the biggest, most horrific experiment of them all has yet to be completed, she ends up leading the effort to save the world. But she's not a mad genius, not a secret agent, and not even in the military, and the only man with the knowledge to help her succeed is her own worst enemy, a remorseless, manipulative villain hunted by the Allies, the Nazis, and supernatural monsters alike. A dark fantasy based on the work of H.P. Lovecraft, Astronomy is Richard Wadholm's debut novel. Richard's fiction has been published several times in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, and his story Green Tea, which appeared in Dozois' Year's Best anthology, was nominated for the year 2000 Theodore Sturgeon Award. Review: Wadholm writes with a much crisper prose style than Lovecraft and some of his devotees, but he plays fair in his use of the mythos, without falling into caricature or excessive melodrama. Astronomy has the slick, fast pace of a contemporary thriller, for all its WWII setting, and I liked it for that. --Charles de Lint (The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction) This is where you turn when you want adventure, action, and a visit from the ancient onesâ¦. A bang-up all-American mission in post-World War II Germany, complete with noble Allies and dastardly SS men -- with a hefty helping of every unnameable and named horror in the Cthulhu vault. An old-fashioned dime novel wrapped up in the very latest technology. It's going to be interesting to see what he brings us next. Be ready for anything. --Lisa DuMond, Sfsite.com It takes a lot of nerve to trace the steps of a master, let alone a master such as Lovecraft. For the most part, Wadholm carries it off smoothly. To prepare for Astronomy, I took time to reread "Dagon" and "The Dunwich Horror." Truthfully, Wadholm's style is more to my taste than Lovecraft's is. He moves faster. He uses language at least as well. Modern readers will probably like him better. --C.J. Czelling, Strange Horizons Wadholmâs first novel is a welcomed addition to the Cthulhu Mythos tales written by many other writers. The novel uses it and the other projects to tell a very interesting story that should be enjoyed by the casual horror reader as well as the Cthulhu Mythos collector. Wadholm is off to a good start and I hope he continues in this vein, so to speak. --Barry Hunter, Baryon Author / Editor: Wadholm, Richard Category: Science Fiction ISBN: 1930815573 DO NOT BUY, IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE FREE MOBIPOCKET READER User tags: Votes: Reviews: Review it!
