FOLK: Political, COUNTRY: Country Folk
This song is based on "A Modest Proposal", Johnathan Swift's unique, satirical solution to widespread hunger in Ireland in the 1600s and 1700s. Current attitudes would seem to make it relevant once again.

A Modest Proposal, Revised (Letâs Eat The Poor)
Copyright 2004 Alan R. Haynes
Country Folk, With a Gene Autry flavor
Verse 1: The poor are such a nuisance, tell me what good are they?
Everything comes down to money, and they don't pay their way
Johnathan Swift proposed it, I'm just saying what he said before
Think of the money we can save if we eat the poor
Let's eat the poor, let's feed people people
It solves many problems, and it can't be done any cheaper
Let's eat the poor. The young ones taste the best!
Then let's say those magic words, "It will cost the taxpayers less"!
Verse 2: They didn't prepare themselves, so we'll prepare them now
You can prepare the poor just like you do a cow
Flanks are for roasts and steaks, ribs are good on the grill
Their livers are great with onions, but their hearts are much better still (To Chorus)
Bridge: It's their fault if they're poor, they should have worked harder
We can eat the young ones now, or save them for cannon fodder

Alan Ross Haynes was born long, long ago on a faraway planet, where he was raised by extraterrestrial bipeds that played country music.
Alan has always loved to write and has excelled at it. As the feature editor of his high school newspaper, he was nominated for a national award from Columbia University. In recent years, Alan wrote a technical article concerning plant pathology that has been published in the U.S., Europe, and Australia.
Alanâs music is primarily Country Folk and New Thought Spiritual. He also has a quirky side, as evidenced in his new single, âBack In Vietnamâ as well as in songs such as âLetâs Eat The Poorâ and âGas Station Gizzardsâ.
Influences include John Prine, Randy Newman, Harry Chapin, Tom Lehrer, Rick Nelson, Bob Dylan, John Gorka, Gordon Lightfoot, Cat Stevens, Tim Buckley, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie; Peter, Paul, and Mary; and a host of others. His voice is sometimes compared with Chris Smithers.
Alan performed with the Unity Clearwater Band, a Contemporary Christian band, from 2001-2006. In this capacity, he has performed with well-known artists, including Jana Stanfield, Karen Taylor-Good, David Roth, Fred Bogert, Penny Nichols, Paula Hawley, Greg Tamblyn, Richard Mekdeci, and others.
He recently performed his satirical song "Let's Eat The Poor" at a house concert in Saugerties, N.Y., with recording artist David Roth and Richard Kniss, legendary bass player for Peter, Paul, and Mary and John Denver.
Alan currently performs with the folk/country/pop group Holland, Haynes, Thompson, and Tooch in the Hudson Valley area of New York. He lives in Beacon, New York.
