Barnstormers scrap first CD try, start fresh

Two months ago, local doom country band Barnstormers had its first full album done. It was recorded, in the can and artwork was being discussed.

Then the quartet had a change of heart.

"We deleted everything off all of the hard drives," Ronnie Moore, the band's lead man on vocals, rhythm guitar and banjo, deadpanned. "We thought we were finished. Then, I was racking my brain. 'We've done it all wrong; we've overshot it.'

The four-piece of Moore, Christopher Wilson on cello, guitarist and mandolin player Brad Herring and Tyler Westmeyer on bass have been playing live shows (clad in all black) and recording with a minimalist country, Americana sound.

But the album wasn't transcending it.



"With this band in particular, we have stripped it down to the most basic element and here we were trying to make the 'White Album'," Moore said, referring to The Beatles' famous LP. "It didn't really reflect what we were trying to achieve."

So Barnstormers went back to work at Jam Session studio in Madison and just three weeks ago wrapped up "Switchblade Serenades: A Collection of Unfortunate Songs."

"Switchblade Serenade" is the first full song in the 10-track oeuvre that mixes organic and rootsy hymns with large-sounding orchestral cuts.
