CHIARA BROWNE
âBrowne has star quality in spades. A voice to melt the hardest of hearts⦠sheâs a formidable talentâ Colm Oâ Hare (Hot Press)
Australian singer-songwriter Chiara Browne signed to Warner Chappell Music when she was 18 and was swiftly moved to Nashville where she spent time writing and developing her style. She recalls seeing snow for the first time in Nashville falling on a guitar shaped swimming pool! Although her material is tinged with a country flavour her music is diverse and likened to âbluesy singers like Bonnie Raitt & Janis Joplinâ (Hot Press).
Her return to Sydney saw Chiara enjoy a successful period of performance and collaboration with many established Australian acts such as Steve Clark (Died Pretty), Tania Bowra, and Jackie Orszaczky & Tina Harrod. She moved to Ireland via the UK where she co-wrote with Boo Hewerdine (The Bible, Eddi Reader). She has played solo at the Edinburgh Festival and several London venues and with her band has played festivals around Ireland including Hooves & Grooves and Rhythm & Roots. Regular support slots have seen Chiara play with Declan OâRourke, Damien Dempsey, Grada, Roesy, Gail Davies, Sonny Condell and most recently Gretchen Wilson. AboutFace Theatre Company commissioned Chiara to write and produce original music for two of their critically acclaimed plays, Featuring Loretta and The Laramie Project.
Chiara Browne & her band, The Rose Ponies, have independently released two epâs that prompted renowned broadcaster and musicologist PJ Curtis to say: âShe is a serious talent. I would have no problem playing ALL the tracks because I love it. This woman gets better with each listenâ.
Names that frequently emerge in relation to Chiaraâs voice and music are Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crowe, Gillian Welch, Julie London and even Thom Yorke!
In April 2006, Chiara was invited to tour with songwriter Paul Brady as his support guest for 18 dates around Ireland. Not long into the tour Chiara shared the stage with Paul & his stella band for vocals & percussion as the the final songs were played. Chiara has since been in the studio with Paul Brady & songwriter/composer Ronan Hardiman.
July 2006, saw the independent release the of Chiaraâs eagerly anticipated debut album which she has co-produced with her drummer Sean Devitt (The Devlins, Daniel Lanois). The album is the culmination not only of Chiaraâs emergence as a creative force that refuses to be ignored but also a vindication of her decision to come and base herself in Ireland six years ago. Testament to this is the roster of Irish musical talent that graces the new album: the aforementioned Sean Devitt; Bill Shanley (Mary Black, Paul Brady); Garvan Gallagher (Scullion, Sonny Condell); Mick McCarney (Sean Keane); Bob McDonnell; Aengus Devine; Michelle Mason (Declan OâRourke) and Jim OâNeill (Today FM).
The new album contains eleven tracks that have been created on a journey of love, sweat and soul. They will bear the touch and interpretation of an artist whose influences have demanded a fidelity to the power and source that is true songcraft.
