Throughout her life, Dawn Fortner has sung in her church choir and performed as a soloist. She has been singing since she was a toddler and began performing at age 9. Throughout her teenage years she performed at many functions, including writing and singing her high school class graduation song, and was voted "Most Talented" by her classmates. She spent her early years writing love songs, which she sang mostly to her close friends.

Her first wedding song was penned in 1986 after a classmate asked Dawn to perform at her wedding. Frustrated that she couldn't find any wedding songs that fit her vocal range and style, she wrote a song called "This Vow so True" (not yet recorded). Her classmate loved it, and so did the wedding guests. She was asked to sing the song at several more weddings during her college years.

Dawn focused on her full-time job and raising a family for a number of years, with the exception of writing a few Christian songs. As fate would have it, she was asked to sing in a close friend's wedding in 2006. After contemplating singing "This Vow so True," she decided that her friend deserved a special song, and "I Have Saved My Love for You" was born.

After receiving many compliments on "I Have Saved My Love for You" from the wedding guests, and realizing that there are not many songs on the market strictly written for weddings, Dawn decided that it was time to make her song available to the public. She approached Guy Archer, a fellow church member and CDBaby artist, about helping her finalize the song and the project. Guy produced the song, arranged, and performed the instrumentation, for which Dawn will always be grateful.
