From the liner notes:
This is the kind of recording project I've always wanted to do. I'm not sure why. I suppose it's because some of my favorite memories are those that were made while I was sitting and listening to a singer-songwriter play his or her original songs with nothing but a guitar. I enjoy a full band on a fully produced CD as much as the next guy, but I also enjoy hearing a song in its purest form. I saw Jimmy Lafave, Betty Elders, and David Rodriguez play their songs in this fashion many times at The Chicago House while I was living in Austin in the late eighties. I saw Townes Van Zant play all by himself at the Cactus Cafe and Eric Blakely did the same across town at the Austin Outhouse. Many times while I was listening to one of those fine singer-songwriters work their craft, I thought about how much I'd like to have a recording of the performance.
It just made sense to me to attempt to capture a little of what I so much admired in those folks.
I wrote these songs over the last fifteen years. They're about my friends and family for the most part. There's one about my wife, one about a former student, one about an old girlfriend, one about a girl I wanted to make a girlfriend of, one that's pure fiction, and one that's pure fact. I'd be more specific, but that would take part of the fun out of listening, now wouldn't it? Nothing's over-dubbed or punched in. I didn't put the guitar on one track and then sing over the guitar track on a separate track. I don't have the time or temperament for that kind of thing. I just sat down and played and sang. Each song is the best I could do at the time. I've done them all better. I've done some worse. It's not supposed to be fancy and it isn't, but if you enjoy this record half as much as I enjoyed hearing the artists I mentioned above, you're in for a treat.
