This 2006 CD by John Harrelson has an R&B flavor to it. He uses a horn section on two of the tunes and brought in harmonica wizard Jeff Masters for two songs. R&B-flavored Blues/Rock. 60s Stones, Van Morrison, and LA grit.
11 MP3 Songs
BLUES: Blues-Rock, ROCK: Americana
Details:
A collection of songs, the oldest written 1968, the newest right at the time of recording the disc in 2005. Harrelson reminds the listener; "They're all true stories."
The song "More than Lonely" was written in 1969, on the occasion of Brian Jones' death. This features a lap-steel solo that screams and and organ solo that is sweet to the ears. "Twenty-four Hours" is a 1971 nod to the Beatles. "Go Home, Liza" deals with an affair that crashed during the sessions for this CD. The horn-section here brings to mind classic R&B. "Pooz Pooz" features a soprano sax solo by the highly regarded Steve Alaniz, as well as fantastic double-entendre's that earn an X-rating. There is a strong flavor of Van Morrison and Stax R&B, a flash of Hendrix, even a splash of Santana, a dash of Otis Redding. There's even a Jimmy Reed song that [gasp!] has never been covered. Amazing.
Danny Oberbeck and Emily Moultrie add vocals. Jeff Masters plays harmonica on two tracks. Steph Kuhn and D.J.Alverson are the pocket rhythm section.
This is a CD to expand your familiarity with Harrelson, not the most accurate introduction to his work. "Feral Angel" and the 2007 "Mojave" reflect his current live shows. This disc, though, is great Rock'n'roll for the informed listener.
