ROCK: No Wave, POP: Power Pop
Details:
The debut EP from Hiss and Chambers, a Portland-based quartet combining anthemic rock and dark retro dance stylings.
F.I.Y.L: Echo & the Bunnymen, Block Party, the Cure, Interpol,Joy Division, The Editors, Bauhaus, New Order, U2.
Featuring singer/guitars Shawn Saindon (Vacationland/Thruthewires), Drummer Ryan Dolan (Sheila Divine/Lincolnville), Mike Hamlin (Peepshow/Vespertine) on guitar and bassist Jasper Rice.
In February of 2006, Dolan, Shawn Saindon (guitar, vocal), Jasper Rice (bass, vocal) and Mike Hamlin (guitar) convened to form a new musical relationship. In a room barely larger than a broom closet, the four set to work carving out an identity partly inspired by some home demos Saindon had collected since his departure from Portland rockers Vacationland.
Moody but danceable; rock but not vapid, goth but pop. The challenge the Hiss faced and beat in their formation was the balancing what is pure fun and what is artistically important and viable. The sweet spot somewhere in the middle of that conversation is where they landed.
Saindon says âWe consider ourselves a dance band full of musicians who have never been in a dance band before. The way the Cure or Block Party are a dance bands, I guess. Itâs been great to watch the first rows of the audience move to the beat.â
Dolan continues, âSo weâve been going at this whole thing with a bit of naivety of the genre, which I think forces whatâs coming out the other side to be genuine, or at least an honest vision. Anyway, we were just so tired of audience members staring up into the singerâs nose or at the guitaristâs left hand.â
In February of 2007, the band went into Halo Recording Studio with lauded producer and engineer, Jonathan Wyman to record the debut EP Making Eyes featuring the radio and dance floor favorites Decay and Glory #1.
Portland and Boston Djs and mix artists have also gotten into the action; J. Hjort and Moshe, among others, are currently hard at work remixing songs from Making Eyes. Listen for these on the dance floor soon.
SOME REVIEWS of "MAKING EYES"
"...You know as soon as you hear it: This is going to be stuck in my head. And you want to hear it over and over again." www.thebollard.com
"...Hiss & Chambers deliver dancefloor-friendly, vamped-out tunes that delve into goth and melancholy, but always keep the beat pumping." -The Portland Phoenix
"It's entirely fantastic alternative/indie/new wave stuff. Four seconds into listening to the track "Decay" I got that welcome "this is freaking cool alternative music like the way it used it be" kind of feeling.
...Hiss & Chambers don't necessarily sound like these bands, but I did think of Echo & the Bunnymen, the Cure, Joy Division, Bauhaus, New Order, the Cult and, well, you get the idea. But don't get me wrong, Hiss & Chambers aren't trying to be any of these bands, they're just influenced by them. I get it and I am smitten with what I've heard." - Portland Press Herald
