John West was born and raised in the crawfish canefields of Baton Rouge, La. In addition to the bluesy, French-influenced culture of Louisiana, he had musical guidance from his four older siblings and a strong spirit instilled by his mother, a social activist and childhood educator. Throughout his youth, John was active in choirs both at church and school. In high school, he participated in musical theatre at Baton Rouge High under the musical direction of Robbie Giroir. John moved to Chicago at 19 to finish school at Columbia College Chicago. He was eager to head north after being seduced by the strong artist community, spoken word scene and the prospect of being closer to his older sister, an amazing woman who continues to be a strong role model for him. Trained in both guitar and piano, John began writing original compositions and lyrics in college. Influenced by musicians such as Otis Redding, Cat Stevens, Jill Scott, Gil Scott-Heron, Jack Johnson and many other contemporaries, John pushes himself to create soul without crooning, R&B without formula, pop without gloss. He strives to push the boundaries of genre, and create music that is original, fresh, and enjoyed by people of different walks of life.
