Hello Everyone...
This is my debut record! And for those who do not know me, I am Kaiulani. My name is Hawaiian. It is my birth name inspired from the late Princess Ka'iulani, passed down through my family over the last few generations.
I have had 2 fancy schmancy bios written up about me recently and personally I don't feel comfortable with either. So at the risk of not sounding as professional as I might like, here are some words of my own.

This is a piano based record of original tunes. I am based in Los Angeles and play the beautiful singer/songwriter club circuit here (Genghis Cohen, Hotel Cafe, Temple Bar, etc), as well as other events and venues. Music from this record can be heard on the soon to be released Byron Katie DVD's. This is an honor as Katie is a true inspiration to me.

The songs on "Break Open" are not one time listens, or as a friend noted... not for passive listening. They go deeper and deeper the more you listen. It's like being in a very long meditation and working through all the layers.... that's what writing a song is like for me. I get struck with a melody usually or a hook and then lyrically I refine refine refine until I get to the most clear poignant statement or phrase that mirrors the truth of that moment for me.
It's Okay To Be Here" (track 5) is a great example of this.

My intention is always for the song to be a reflection of what is beneath the distraction or story of the mind, of what is unchanging and thus nurturing and loving at its very core.
This is what the Intro for Break Open speaks of.... who am I... who are you?

If the lyrics to some of the songs sound like a surface layer of something, I invite you to look and listen again... and again...

Break Open was recorded independently this past year in multiple studios in Los Angeles. It is co-produced by Thomas Barquee, Jason Hiller and myself.

The record was mixed by Tal Herzberg and mastered at Oasis Mastering by the renowned Eddy Schreyer. These guys are my dream team and they took some rough recordings and really shined them up so beautifully. I am immensely grateful for their talent and dedication to helping me create the record I wanted.

These guys epitomize why I love Hollywood. I love being in recording studios, Lots and Stages (being on the Warner Brothers lot literally brings tears of joy to me every time). Working with true professionals brings me an indescribable joy and sense of fullfillment. Tal, like no one else in the music world so far gave me that gift this spring.

While Hollywood is often perceived as an epicenter of faux and fallacy, it is also a land of such creativity, dedication, joy and honesty. I personally continue to find the truth of who I am here. This city has been my holy-woods (as referred to on the first track of the record).
It is here that I could let everything fall apart and remember what I really wanted- to allow myself that desire and become the fullfiller of my own longing. I named the record Break Open because Break Open is the secret I have discovered. It is that willingness to let everything fall apart and discover first hand that which has never been broken. That which is always trustworthy and always here.
