Ugochi Nwaogwugwu
âAfrican Buttaflyâ
This Chicago native is an international singing sensation who has been performing her original style of song and word poetics since she began her musical journey over ten years ago. She is known in her hometown best for her refined storytelling and songwriting ability as well as the technique and song style she has been known to dub âvocal harmonics.â
Generally Ugochiâs style of spoken word has been fused with her unique singing ability in order to generate a more powerful word sound attraction. A child of Nigeria, West Africa, Ugochi has grown into a full-fledged singer and songwriter comfortable enough with her talent for sound and the absence of it. A former rapper, turned poet, gone singer, Ugochi has become extremely versatile and creative with the range of music she is able to perform.
Ugochiâs music has allowed her to travel to many countries in Europe, including performing her extremely individualized form of sound power in Paris, Nigeria, Amsterdam, London, Leeds, Brasil, Italy and Jamaica. She has been featured on WTTWâs Wild Chicago and Artbeat Chicago, WXRT, WGN Morning Show, as well as performed with acclaimed artists such as Common, Malik Yusef, J. Ivy, Eric Benet, Michael McDermott, Edwin McCain, Maxi Priest, Umphreyâs McGee, and most recently John Legend and Femi Kuti. She was selected as a finalist in the HBO/Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam 2001 Competition. She also performed in Dance Africa Chicago 2001 where she received rave reviews by the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun Times. In 2003, legendary Chicago diva Chaka Khan saluted the emerging artist as âsomeone who will have a long life in the music business,â when she was selected as a semi-finalist on Star Search. Ugochi also wrote the only original song for the critically acclaimed âRed Hot and Riot Compilation,â in honor of the late Fela Ransome Kuti and global AIDS awareness. The song, So Be It, was performed by R&B star Kelis.
In 2004 Ugochi concluded her second tour promoting her debut musical project, a journey that led her through Baltimore, New York, Los Angeles, London and Italy and Ghana in March 2005 where she entertained Ashanti school children with the power of her original poetic style. Thanks to the underground success of her debut album project appropriately titled âAfrican Buttafly,â Ugochi is currently working on her sophomore album project that is sure to be another word, sound phenomenon. Illinois Entertainer Magazine hails her as an urban singing phenomenon, a rising star with reach far beyond her city block. Chicagoâs Power 92.3 radio personality, Cortney âBabygirlâ Hicks, acknowledges her as the next independent artist to watch as she soars to her rightful place in music history. In 2006 Ugochi traveled to Brasil, Italy, London and Jamaica spreading her gospel of love and life through her music ministry. Ugochiâs hope is that she will see more of the planet through her music, eventually bridging the gap while taking in the sights and sounds of the world.
