Melodic and moody indie-pop/rock with 60s tunefulness and 70s atmosphere - not retro, but not unfamiliar. It takes chances and will surprise you, but not just for the sake of doing so.
6 MP3 Songs
POP: Power Pop, POP: Pop/Rock
Details:
"Last of the Sunday Drivers" is the first disc from Chicago indie-pop group, The Weightlifters. Itâs an ambitious, self-released 6-song EP; the music is moody and melodic with 60s tunefulness and 70s atmosphere â not retro, but not unfamiliar. It takes chances and will surprise you, but not just for the sake of doing so.
Biography...
The truth is that there are no Weightlifters to speak of; not yet anyway. This is essentially the solo project of Adam McLaughlin, a Philadelphia-area transplant living in Chicago. "Last of the Sunday Drivers" isn't intended to be singer/songwriter-style music though. It's music that was written for a band that doesn't exist yet. Adam plays most of the instruments, getting help from a few exceptional musicians found scattered around the country. Drums are flown in from Texas and California. Strings come by way of Oregon. His wife, Carol, also makes a few appearances on the record.
A bit of history... the last time we saw Adam, he was playing guitar for the Idle Wilds, out of Philadelphia. Idle Wilds were signed by Big Star drummer, Jody Stephens, to the briefly-revived Ardent pop record label back in the 90s. They made a record or two, toured a bit, and then disbanded. Idle Wilds notably appeared on the well-received "Poptopia!: Power Pop Classics Of The '90's" compilation and on the recently-released Big Star tribute album, "Small World".
