Take exit 91 off of interstate 65 to Hodgenville and you may think youâre in the heart of Small Town, USA, even so this is where a hard rocking band called â31 Southâ calls home. Like the saying âbig things come in small packagesâ well big things come from small towns as well. Take time and ask around and youâll soon discover that 31 South is a talented group of musicians thatâs gained a lot of admiration from the local populace. The band started with only two members early on in 2006 when long time friends Stephen Curry and Aaron McDowell began playing guitar together. Right from the start anyone that listened could tell that these two had it going on. Stephen and Aaron would play for hours, each one trying to out do the other. This friendly competition made way for what can only be described an awe-inspiring guitar twosome. It wasnât long before the two realized that they had a sound together that just seemed to be on the same wavelength. They embarked on their search for a suitable drummer for the would be band, and the search lead to Matt Hancock. Matt could keep a beat with the best of them, but his real flair would shine through as lead vocalist. He had a sound that was precisely what the unnamed band was in the market for. On the other hand there was the question of who would be behind the drums. Kelly Thompson always dreamed of breaking out with a band that had a novel sound and making a go in the music business. Kelly stopped by the bandâs practice one afternoon with the intention of selling the band some sound equipment. It only took a short few minutes to realize these guys were for real. Kelly offered to sit in while the three searched for a drummer. It all just seemed right. In a matter of days Kelly was ask to be the bands full time drummer. The band kicked around more than a few names, and then the name 31 South came up. The name was created by Curry as a way to pay tribute to a friend that lost his life on a section of highway by the same name. There were no more debates; this band would be tagged 31 SOUTH. The band went to work without delay. Using lyrics written by Aaron McDowell and other band members the group began arranging music that had a sound all its own. In addition to original material they practiced and perfected a number of southern rocks greatest hits, in a way that would make all the greats proud. The band began playing local venues and competitions and won the first battle of the band they entered at the 2006 Lincoln Days Battle of the Bands in Larue County KY, and placing in a local talent show earning a trip to the 2007 Kentucky State Fair Talent Show. Soon after in the fall, 31 sparked the interest of Jon White, CEO of the independent record label Derby City Music Group. The band signed its first record deal on December 9th 2006. They entered the studio in January of 2007 and recorded an original 10 track CD titled âFrom Out of Nowhereâ. The band expanded to five members in the spring of 2007 with the add-on of bassist Abe Miller. The band's first CD was released for sale on the 31st of May and the reaction has been overwhelming. Whatâs the best way to sum up a group called 31 South? Small town and big dreams
