FOLK: Progressive Folk, FOLK: Alternative Folk
Details:
ENSIGN TWO (VOLUME II) is second in the archival and anthology series by singer/songwriter Allen Ensign. The ENSIGN series reveals the other Allen Ensign; namely, not the Allen Ensign fronting punk and rock bands; Childsupport, Quisp, Whores of Babylon and Monster Creep, but namely; the projects where acoustic or âwoodenâ music filtered in and out; Son Flower, Neon Trout, Pink Purple and more recently, Pushing Daisies (Anisoptera), and Seahorse with Bill âMudboyâ Lackey. Recordings in the ENSIGN series sometimes span three or more decades, and thus provide the listener a voyage into the often strange, funny, eccentric, but always poetic lyrics and tales of Allen Ensign. Transylvania, as with the song This Is The Season, were initially recorded by Matt Cameron and mixed by Jack Endino, however the two songs did not make it to modest 10-song collection demo on CD, put out by Allen Ensign to promote Pushing Daisies. Here, however, is the gypsy influenced tale about desiring the life of a vampire. Bass is played here by Reyza Sageb. Dorian Gray, that follows, also was recorded by M. Cameron and mixed by J. Endino. It is heavy on the 12-strings, and features a lush bass part by R. Sageb. The sparse, T.S. Eliot, was recorded at the Mudshack, by B. Lackey, circa. 1991. Weight of the World, recorded and mixed by Cameron and Endino, respectively, is probably the most upbeat song on Ensign Two. This Anisoptera tune of course, features Sageb, on bass. Pious Friends, reaches way back to somewhere in the misty past of the late 1970s, perhaps composed in St. Paul. Andrea, is a Seattle composition, featuring none other than Scott Summers (Evangeline) on bass. Will Oâ The Wisp, was done the Anisoptera way, and features weird Leslie. Picture of Little T.C. is, 17th century cavalier poet, Andrew Marvellâs homage to a little girl, here set to music by Allen Ensign, and recorded at the Mudshack by Lackey. Bruce Fairweather, rock god of Motherlovebone and Green River fame, shows up on the next track, So Far Away, recorded at House of Leisure in Seattle by ace engineer, Gary King.
Bass chores on this ballad are covered by Mark Patterson, from Kitchen Radio. Dorian Gray (Revisited) recorded at the Mudshack, in Oakland, California, was actually, the first recording of Dorian Gray, which later appeared in Anisoptera.
The cover artwork and graphics are by Reyzart, the original photo having been taken by Greg Savalin. Enkimusic and film are elated to present this second collection by Allen Ensign, as it does begin to present a lifeâs work.
