LAMENT
A Musical Play in Two Acts
Music, Book, and Lyrics by C. Lee Cusenbary, Jr.
Music and Arrangements by Philip Close
For the first time in Englandâs glorious history, the country is close to financial ruin due to the unwise spending and religious wars of King Charles I. Englandâs elected Parliament secretly conspires to end Englandâs monarchy by arresting King Charles for treason. King Charlesâ sixteen year old daughter, Elizabeth, is thrust into Englandâs political struggle when her hand in marriage is promised to Prince Afonso VI of Portugal as a political favor. Elizabeth refuses to marry Afonso because she is in love with Will Dobson. Will is a member of the House of Commons, and unwillingly must take part in deciding her fatherâs fate. Despite efforts of Elizabeth and Will, and the guidance of ghosts of past monarchs, the Kingâs lack of repentance leads to his destruction by public beheading. With the monarchy destroyed, Will and Elizabeth can be together without fear, and the people of England embark on new lives without a King. (Lament is based in large part on the actual individuals, transcripts and events leading to the beheading of King Charles I in 1648).
