Details:
Andy Dubois (born December 24, 1951) is an American singer-songwriter who began playing guitar for family and friends as a teenager. He still does alot of that today.
Born in Pompano Beach, Florida, Andy started singing solo in the mid-1970's in various South Florida venues. Moving to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1994 brought about collaborations with fellow singer-songwriters in local duo and trio venues.
Then with the formation of the blues band Greydog in 1996, Andy continued singing and playing electric guitar until his return to Florida in 2003. Back at home in Florida, Andy began performing acoustic solo with a blend of folk, rock, country, blues and original tunes.
Hwy19 began in October, 2006, with the chance meeting of Andy Dubois and Daisy Millett at Open Mic at A Third Place in Eustis, FL. Andy, with his background of Blues and Americana, fresh from the music scene around Chapel Hill and Raleigh, NC, had been playing at Open Mic for a couple of months. Daisy, newly returned to the area after an absence of 26 years, learned to play the bass from some of the best Bluegrass and Old Time players in the mountains of North Carolina. She has won awards in both Bass and Harmonica. She played Bass in the 2005 Old Time Band Competition at the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlerâs Convention in Athens, Alabama where they took first place (The Bob White Band). She is a past Harmonica Champion at the Fiddlerâs Grove Fiddlerâs Convention in Union Grove, North Carolina as well as the Sparta Fiddlerâs Convention. In addition, she played with âJay Costa and the Sunshine Boysâ who placed in the top 5 at Clifftop, West Virginia (the Appalachian Old Time String Band Competition) She brings many years of musical experience to Hwy19.
Hwy19 doesnât sound like Bluegrass, Old Time, Country or Blues, though you can hear traces of those roots. Andy and Daisy have combined their many years of music and styles to form a robust âNew Americanaâ sound. In addition to Andyâs original works, they play such toe tapping tunes as âHey, Good Lookingâ, âSweet Home, Chicagoâ, âBrown Eyed Girlâ and âWorking Man Bluesâ. They also work well with Country standards like âMake the World Go Awayâ and âI Canât Stop Loving Youâ. Folks really seem to like their energy and sound because they keep coming back for more.
Andyâs latest guitar is a Taylor acoustic dreadnought bought in 2002. Daisy plays a late â40s Kay bass acquired from an Old Time bass player whose arthritis got so bad he couldnât play it anymore. She said she tried over 20 basses before she found the one with just the right âsoulâ. These two instruments blend warmly with Andyâs lead vocals and Daisyâs harmonies
