Details:
Mavri Magioneza is an e-rock (TM) band from Thessaloniki, Greece, formed in 1997. Their goal is to combine several elements of electronic music around a heavy rock core. The lyrics have a strong political edge aiming at things that most of us encounter in everyday life but few of us have the guts to sing about. They have released 4 albums and played at countless gigs all around Greece, in-front of an ever expanding alert audience.
Press Release âMavri Magioneza: Kalh Orexhâ
This is the fourth album for the leaders of e-rock, an idiom based on hard rock, which combines, however, several elements of electronic music in a compact package intended for critical listeners. The compositions are once again word-centered, but this time Mavri Magioneza puts its poetics aside so as to speak out. Political verses that bite and do not favour anyone, riffs and beats that kick in the stomach, and an incredible production in four different studios both in Greece and Germany.
The album begins as a âgastronomic audio recreational programmeâ, with âKali Orexiâ (âEnjoy your mealâ), a track in the form of prose, which prepares us for what comes next. In âJunk Food (4 Thought)â, a âmegatonâ riff is mixed with the break beats, so as to clarify the albumâs title. Food for Mavri Magioneza is not only the one you put in your plates, but it is also the one that enters your minds. And when food is not nourishing, you end up in a situation like the one described in âKino Mystikoâ (âCommon Secretâ). This is a song with bittersweet verses, fighting against consumerism and modern labour reality, in a surprising composition with the pre-recorded fragments taken from television, the carefully programmed beats and the hard guitars. âSynthimaâ (âSloganâ), on the other hand, is a purely political song, which starts like a typical drumânâbass track, but soon develops into a dynamic e-rock composition with hard riffs and violins! Most of all, the verses âpinâ modern Greek (and not only Greek) reality in a notice board for everyone to see.
On this occasion, the three following songs make clear references to the modern socio-political setting, as, for example, âDakrygonaâ (âTear Gasesâ) or âKinissi Matâ (âCheck Mateâ), which refer to many of the demonstrations of recent years and to the way each government dealt with them. With huge guitars the former and with sharp riffs and a two bass drum setup the latter, adrenaline has reached its maximum. Then, a pleasant note follows with âPeripolikoâ (âPolice Carâ), a cheerful song, with its ska/punk influences, sending optimistic messages to all those who believe in a better future. You have almost listened to half the album, when another prose (âDiallima Gia Diafimiseisâ â âBreak For Commercials) puts you in the climate of the anti-commercials that follow, represented by âGlamourâ, an ironic song with a pleasantly strange orchestration and ending, in spite of its short duration. âTo Pio Kalo Narkotikoâ (âThe Best Drugâ), with its strong riffs, drumânâbass rhythms mixed with rock drums and a sexy mood, is the next song in the album followed by âMama Amerikiâ (âMother Americaâ). This is a song that is not afraid to shout âShame on youâ to the policy of one of the most ruthless governments of the last centuries. This leads you to the amazing âTileoptikos Theosâ (âTelevision Godâ) with its dance rock aesthetics, its atmospheric guitars and the wonderful female backing vocals. Its mocking (like a child would do) verses refer to the modern TV reality as it has been formed by different reality and talent shows.
The last song of the album (âHoris Epodoâ - âNo Chorusâ) is the most down tempo with hair-raising emotional melody and verses, which, on the occasion of the tragedy of little Alex from Veria - Greece, wonders about all the other children who do not live in the world we think that exists. Finally, the last prose, âKali Honepsiâ (âGive Your Ears A Treatâ), closes the album in a beautiful way, offering some of the listeners something more that the rest of the album.
A milestone album for Mavri Magioneza with a very special packaging, the cards-sous-verres of the verses (!), the amazing artwork and the discount coupons for the groupâs concerts (!), the album is here to feed us something more ânourishingâ. It has been released by Tech Killa Records, the privately-owned record company of Mavri Magioneza.
BONUS: Friends outside Greece will receive, via email, the translation of the lyrics in English, with every album purchase, FOR FREE!
