Children For A Peaceful World is a program that was created to teach children Christian values by serving others. In the experience of helping other children, each child becomes more aware of their own personal value, which reinforces their self-esteem. With this perfect exchange, both parties receive the benefits of giving and receiving.

Originally called Kids for Kids, the Children's Ministry was first established in 1986. It began with 35 children of different practicing Christian faiths in the rural community of Panola County in East Texas. The children, ranging from 3 to 16 years of age, sang original Christian songs at fairs, festivals, churches and hospitals all over the Ark-La-Tex. Their unique musical performance included signing techniques for the hearing impaired.

In addition to performing, the original group of children raised money for St. Judeâs Hospital and participated in a camp for âburn survivorsâ where they learned the value of being kind to children who are âdifferentâ.

The program came back to life and in February of 2006 and was approved for a 501c3 (not for profit status) in San Angelo, Texas. Today we are called Children For A Peaceful World because we believe that our children can make a difference. The Kids for Kids songs have all been translated into Spanish. This serves as a wonderful opportunity to bridge Anglo with Hispanic cultures. It also serves as a learning tool to help with correct pronunciation and teach the children a second language.

We at Children For A Peaceful World have witnessed and experienced the power of music and we appreciate the wisdom of young children. Through our program its not only the children who benefit but the adults always leave with an uplifting experience as well. Children are not judgmental and hold no real prejudices. They see the world with eyes of optimism and they sense no limits to what they can do.

This is made evident in the words of Olara Otunnu, the special representative of the secretary-general for children and armed conflict. "Young people share deeply and instinctively the ideals of the rights and well-being of other children â instinctively, they relate to that."

Today there is a major concern for children in Grammar and Middle School with very real problems concerning sex and drugs. Our basic personalities are formed between the ages of 1 and 5. These days with two income families this age group needs to be addressed. If a child learns self-esteem at an early age they are less likely to fall into the traps of group pressures and the need of âbelonging.â

Since the 1940âs thousands of studies have made on the power of music. It is a simple, inexpensive tool that can make a dramatic difference in our lives. Songs with uplifting positive messages can help prevent insecurities and put us in a positive state of mind. It has been proven that harmonic instrumental music played at 50 to 60 beats a minute can significantly make a positive difference in health, mental attitudes and general well being.

One story comes to mind about how the Kids for Kids music was used A woman in an apartment house lived next door to a little girl whoâs parents were alcoholics. Many times she could hear the couple fighting and then she could hear the little girl crying in her room where she shared a wall with the woman. The woman bought the little girl the tapes and never heard the child cry again. Instead she could hear the Kids for Kids music playing through the wall.

Musicologist, Cynthia Jordan, founder of Children For A Peaceful World, has witnessed first hand the long term positive effect this program has made on the lives of the original group of children who called themselves, âKids for Kids.â Although the children are grown up now with kids of their own, some of the members of the original group are Board Members and consultants to Children For A Peaceful World. They all have testimonies as to how the Kids for Kids ministry made a significant difference in their lives.

Children For A Peaceful World is seeking funding for providing free music to children in pediatrics, childrenâs ministries, schools, churches and families. We see this as a national program. We already have people ready to get involved in California, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana and Texas.

We also want to sponsor community concerts for children. The children will learn Kids for Kids songs and we will involve different groups of children in the performing of the songs. We will also include well known songs such as âIf I Had A Hammerâ and Iâd Like To Teach the World to Sing In Perfect Harmonyâ so the adults can sing along as well. This provides a vicarious, experience for âgrown-upsâ that seems magical.

Children For A Peaceful World will also be providing projects and activities for children to raise monies and interact with children with special needs. We do this by providing a handbook for schools and churches that want to be involved. Concerts, spaghetti suppers and community projects such as a trash pick up are some of our activities. This enables children to feel like they have made a difference in a big way as well as bringing awareness to the environmental and emotional needs of the community.

There is nothing more powerful than unity with a common goal. We at Children For A Peaceful World believe in nurturing our future generations at a very young age. Together with the power of music and the profound, innocent insight of young children we can acquire our common goal of a world living in peace and harmony.
