"Shades of Grey" represents a chronicle of my musical activities during 2003. There are a number of different talented people with whom I worked during the year, and the resulting music covers a range of styles and flavors.

I chuckle when someone comments that one or another of these songs (either written by me or featuring my horn in some way) "doesn't sound like C M" - I hear myself in all of them, as I do not naturally exist within any particular boundaries of genre or style or musical feel. I don't overtly set out to write a particular song in a particular style, and I do not select projects or people with whom to collaborate with strong preconceptions about how the music will turn out. Like the different shades of the spectrum, there are many different colors on my palette, and while I certainly have some favorites, I do like all of them. All of these songs "sound like" me, and I offer them to you hoping that you may also enjoy all these different colors, all my shades of grey.
