Steve Earle/Bruce Springsteen inspired blue-collar country, folk, and blues from multi award-winning artist Dale Boyle. Includes a version of Springsteenâs My Hometown. NOW AT AN INTRODUCTORY SALE PRICE.
10 MP3 Songs
FOLK: Folk Blues, COUNTRY: Country Folk
Details:
Winner of the 2005 and 2006 Lys Blues Folk/Blues artist of the year award, Dale Boyle intertwines folk, country, and blues traditions in his working class songs.
From the songwriter who penned The Wilbert Coffin Story on his 2004 debut release (In My Rearview Mirror: A Story from a Small Gaspé Town) comes a new album, âSmall Town van Goghâ (2007).
âBoyle employs the same direct, poignant folk, country and blues on his polished and evocative sophomore CD, Small Town Van Gogh, which plays the field between American storytelling greats like Johnny Cash and Woody Guthrie while regularly busting out a rootsier Springsteen or Bob Seger type vibeâ - Jamie OâMeara (Montreal Hour).
âIn keeping with his love for telling rich, heart-felt tales, Daleâs CD, âSmall Town van Goghâ, has a very special connection for himâ â Jennifer Coutlee (SPEC Newspaper).
"Small Town van Gogh" is a song on the life and art of painter, Tennyson Johnson; âBoyle pays a fond tribute on the record's title trackâ â Mike Murphy (McGill Reporter).
The album branches out into a range of topics and sounds, such as the guitar driven Sun Records vibe of "If I Come Back", the mandolin instrumental "At The Kitchen Table", and the tongue-in cheek lyrics of the contemporary country flavoured "Send Monica Away".
Reflective songs such as "Over 100 Years" is a song about William âDukeâ Proctor, one of the few remaining Canadian WWI veterans who passed away in December 2005 at the age of 106.
The albumâs opening track, "Tom", is a critical look at the tendency for the media to speak far more about certain people after they pass away than when they were living. The message is channelled through a hypothetical story; the Tom in the story is Stompinâ Tom Connors.
And thereâs more, including a cover of Bruce Springsteenâs "My Hometown".
Small Town van Gogh: An âExcellent new discâ - Bernie Peruse (Montreal Gazette).
