Description:
Country with a rock and roll edge or rock and roll with a twang
11 MP3 Songs
COUNTRY: Americana, ROCK: Country-Rock
Details:
Long Islandâbased singer/songwriter Jon Geffner has been writing and performing songs since the late 1970s. He was raised on the sixties rock and roll of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. It was his discovery of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen in the mid-1970s, however, that fueled his desire to create music. The influence of Dylan and Springsteen was profound. Through them, Jon realized music could be more than entertainmentâ-that it could provide an avenue for expression and act as an agent of change.
By tracing the influences of his two main mentors, Jon found his way to the early rock and roll of Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly as well as the classic country music of Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. Jon considers his style of music as either rock and roll with a twang or country with a rock-and-roll edge. It all depends on the audience, the venue, or his mood at any given time. Many of his favorite songwriters hail from the Lone Star State of Texas. These include Steve Earle, Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, and Townes Van Zandt. Other influences include John Hiatt, Nick Lowe, and Tom T. Hall.
Jon has played in various Long Island bands since the mid-1980s, most recently Roy Wilsonâs Honky Tonk Boys and the rockabilly outfit the Buzzards. Jon also performs his original material in clubs and coffee houses in Manhattan and Long Island. He is also, along with Jim "Mugz" Mulligan, a member of an acoustic duo called Good Dog Nigel.
Jon has recorded three CDs, Nice Problem to Have, Every Country Road . . . Every City Street, and Departures and Arrivals. He lives on Long Island with his wife Linda and their two cats Fonzie and Mookie.
