Classical music for the didjeridu? here it is. Giving the bass and the percussion to a cello & flute in a haunting, soul searching way.
5 MP3 Songs
CLASSICAL: Contemporary, WORLD: Australian
Details:
My obsession with the didjeridu must go back to when I lived in Sydney Australia...I heard Charlie McMahon playing didj at a pub in Balmain with a keyboard. The sound just stuck there, and it wasn't until I was studying music at UC Berkeley in California and was playing the piano again and starting to want to write music that my hare-brained scheme of writing Classical music for didjeridu, cello & flute came out of "no where"...and I did it...and here it is!!
"Simpsons Desert," one of the tracks, also uses djembe [African drum] and chimes...I was studying Balinese music at the time and was excited by the "chimes and drums" they used in their music.
So I keep composing for the didjeridu...in March '07 I did a new one called "fragments of Baghdad" for didjeridu, cello, flute & harpsichord. I'm hoping to be in the studio recording that later this year.
There's also a "Didjeridu Suite" for didjeridu & cello, and then "Is Anyone There? for didjeridu & cello...this one's also recorded by didjeridu & horn.
Writing Classical music for the didjeridu is an amazing challenge. People can't quite believe it until they hear it because they're thinking "What can you do with 1 note?"
But the didjeridu has this amazing, unique, earthy sound quality that no other instrument has. When you hear it live it goes right through you...if you're on a wooden floor it's like the sound is coming to you even through the floor.
It's all very strange...I moved from my little town in New Zealand to live in Sydney, where I heard the didjeridu, and now I live in California and write music for the didjeridu.
PS...I'm a serious Classical pianist who loves hip hop and Spanish guitar, who grew up on The Beatles and The Troggs, whose favorite song at the moment is Elvis Presley's "I Can't Help Falling In Love," who is currently learning flamenco and painting her studio space.
