Details:
"The title of this album says it all... back to roots. This album is truly an old-school Norsk black metal masterpiece that returns to the roots of 90's Norsk black metal. The production, sound, style, song structure and excellent atmospheres are extremely reminiscent of the 'true' black metal that carries with it so much nostalgia. Mid-paced blast beats are mixed with slower beats and some double bass work with the 'classic' drum sound known so well from the days of this style of black metal. The guitars offer forth truly excellent black metal riffs which, by themselves alone (i.e. without keyboards) offer excellent atmospheres; cold, grim and black. The vocals are very reminiscent of an old Arckanum/old DodheimsGard style and quality that is truly excellent. This album is, over-all, and excellent 'tribute' to the raw, grim and 'stripped-down' Norsk black metal that will appeal strongly to those in search of a nostalgic journey through the legendary Norsk black metal past. Everything has a raw but strong sound, with great production, in the sense that everything is clear and audible, 'fitting together' yet with that old-school production of the black metal of the 90's. There is an excellent 'flow' to the music, nothing feeling or sounding like filler, and though this is most assuredly a returning to roots, it does not have the feeling of just being yet another old rehash of whats already been done. The reason for this is that they have their own style, which is done so well (and for once, doesn't sound like another Darkthrone clone) that it presents itself as truly quality black metal with and identity not seen or felt for many years. There is an excellent variety of riffs, beats and atmospheres that blend together seamlessly while always maintaining the conviction of keeping the music in the old-school black metal style. This album is a must-own for those looking for something new that brings back the truely pure qualities of the old." [ 9/10 ] -- J. Del Russi
