Interview with Shelby
When did you first start singing?

I started singing at a very early age. My first audience was to a collection of my stuffed animals lined up on the couch. But the audience that encouraged me most was my loved ones during family worship.



When did you realize people were starting to take notice?

As a teenager I started singing in church. As time went on, people would ask me to sing for various programs and services. Iâm not sure if they really enjoyed my performances, or if it was because I was an easy candidate they could depend on. Whatever the reason, as time went by, I grew more comfortable and confident in getting up front and singing before the congregation. And of course I always enjoyed singing Godâs praises.

Were you always religious?

I grew up in the church. I experienced every service, tent meeting, evangelist meeting, all night prayer service and Bible study. You name it, I was there. I canât say I always wanted to be there. All my life my mother has been a Bible instructor, so I didnât have much choice! There were certain things you just had to do. Today, I thank the Lord over and over for my mother and her consistent example of what true Christianity is all about.

How does your religion help you?
My belief and faith in God is my foundation. I know He is real. As I was growing up, I saw Him manifest Himself over and over again. Iâve seen my mother cry out to Himânot just on our behalfâbut for others. I remember my trials as a young child when it seemed I had no way out, my mother would claim promises from the Bible and we would pray. The Lord brought peace to my storms, calmness to my chaos. I just love Him for keeping His Word, even though I know I donât always deserve His many blessings.

What are people saying about you and your singing?
People are telling me that theyâve noticed the growth and maturity in my voice. They feel I am getting better and better. All I can say is âpraise the Lord and to God be the gloryâ. There are so many talented people out there. I am just honored to be used by God in this manner.
